Auto to manual conversion?

    I have an automatic transmission in my truck and im having problems with it. I was wondering if there is anyway i can convert the it to manual. I'm wondering about the costs of doing this as well. i hate automatic transmissions and would love to be able to put a 5 speed in it depending on what it would cost and how much work would need to be done. any help is appreciated guys thanks

    It would probably be cheaper to buy a rebuilt Auto and swap it out.

    I can't say for certain, but the ECU and all of the glorious sensors, inputs & outputs the ECU calculates...and all that crap... It might be harder than you think to 'defeat' that. Computers won't usually work properly if they don't receive the proper information/data from sensors that you would be removing.

    But that's just a guess.....

    It's certainly not possible. I can't think of any sensors off the top of my head I'd think it would affect. Quite a bit of work... or money if you don't do it yourself. I've never seen anyone do it to a Taco, but my sister's boyfriend's truck is swapped. It's an 80's chevy... which may be a little different. :D There's a guy parting out his 1st gen on here, I think it's a 5 speed, so I'm sure you could grab the console, boot, and stuff from him!

    what if i just buy a donor tacoma does it have to be the same exact truck model as mine? reg cab, 2.7 4cyl. , etc ???

    What's the point of buying a donor for swapping??

    Sell your truck..... buy another tacoma with a manual trans already in it.

    This is by far the most cost-effective way to do it. Especially if you can't do the swap yourself. To pay someone to do this conversion with all the parts would exceed the value of the truck. The truck I just bought is an Auto and if it dies I'll likely put another one in. I had thought about a 5 speed swap as that's really the only thing I wasn't a fan of when I bought it. But now I don't mind it so much. I like it a lot better than the auto in the 05 I just sold. I've done a few swaps before including on my current BMW summer DD. But anything OBD2 brings a lot more challenges on the electrical side of things. Getting everything physically in place is only half the battle. Actually making it work is another thing entirely. And 35's with a 2.7/auto? Unless you have some really low gears in the axles no wonder you're having issues...

    I just recently went thru the hell of a blown auto trans. & getting quotes from legit shops to rebuild up to $3300.00....

    I ended up getting a used auto trans w/6 month warranty for about $1000.

    But before that had considered a conversion. Alot of the components could be boughten at a wrecking yard at considerable savings, the process is probably more labor intensive than component cost...

    My suggestion is to buy your "donor truck" with a manual transmission, take all the aftermarket parts off your truck, and any pieces that are in better condition than the "donor," and just build up that truck with all the parts off your truck and turn your auto trans. back to stock. Then you can either sell the auto, or keep it around for parts. Honestly this is probably the cheaper, faster, easier route; and the one I took when I was in your boat with a lifted Jeep cherokee.

    So... I swapped a 02 3rz 5 speed into my 96’ 3.4 auto. I put every stitch of wire dash center console the whole 9 yards. I also wanted a tilt steering wheel. I found steering column from a 2000 4 runner auto for $25 on Craigslist and decided screw it and see if it would work. Went in without a problem. I even got the air bag hooked up. The donor motor didn’t have cruise control so I didn’t have to go down that rabbit hole. So I would venture to say yes.
