I'm wishing to become more knowledgeable on our Automatic Transmissions electrical characteristics.

-Things I'm interested in learning is what solenoids are activated for which gears.

-What electrical signal is used to power the solenoids, steady 12VDC power or Pulse Width Modulated, or something else.

-How is the torque converter controlled? My understanding is it can be locked, unlocked or partially locked. Same inquiry as to how that happens.

I've searched and found practically nothing on just how the trans is controlled. What I have found is contradictory as to what solenoids activate what gear.

    What I have found:
Made by Aisin-Warner for Toyota and some other vehicle manufactures.
    Model number is "AC60E/F" - "E" for 2-wheel drive "F" for 4-wheel drive.
Also "AWR6B45", I believe this is Aisin-Warner's part number.

Wiring diagram has the solenoids labeled as:
    SL1
    SL2
    SL3
    SL4
    SLT
    SLU
    SL

All but SL have two wires to each solenoid direct from the Engine ECU. SL is grounded within the transmission and thus only has one wire from the Engine ECU.

Any specific information is appreciated and direction to copious amounts of reading material as well.

Electrical diagram attached for your perusal. Pages 8 & 9 show the solenoids.

    Thanks.
I have the 11,292 page service manual. Theory of operation statements are minimal.

Haven't found anything about reverse gear yet (think it is cable actuated only), no solenoids.

SL and SLU seem to work together for lock.

Only a guess so far, SLT seems to be the culprit that puts the vehicle into limp mode.

My suggestion is to get obdII app on your phone or headunit to learn the tranny or old ovt tune threads.
    All info in service manual
