Auto-trans fluid level madness!!!!!!!

    I just had a drain and fill done. I had the mechanic drop the pan as well. He said about 5.1 quarts came out total. He put back in 5. I'm not sure if he drove it around before rechecking the level. But I have.

    The truck shifts fine in drive, going through all the gears. But it seems a little slower shifting into to reverse. Just takes a few moments more.

    I checked the level both hot and cold. When its cold, its between the cold and hot markers, so that would suggest it is overfilled. But when I drive it around for 10 minutes, shift it a few times from reverse to L, put it in neutral and leave it running, the dipstick shows a slight drop in level. Still between the cold and hot markers but closer to the cold. And that means underfilled.

    Which is the true level? The cold check or the hot check? Does it make sense that the fluid level would drop when hot? I figured it would expand and should rise. Does it sound like I'm low? Could Toyota make the dipstick any harder to get all the way down?

    Per the procedure below, I would be most concerned if you are not in the hot range after following the below steps exactly.

    Reference: Factory Service Manual

    5. BASIC INSPECTION

    (a) Check the fluid level.

    HINT:
    Drive the vehicle so that the engine and transmission are
    at normal operating temperature.
    Fluid temp.: 70 – 80 °C (158 – 176 °F)

    Only use the COOL range on the dipstick as a rough reference
    when the fluid is replaced or the engine does not
    run.

    (1) Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking
    brake.
    (2) With the engine idling and the brake pedal depressed,
    shift the shift lever into all positions from P
    to L position and return to P position.
    (3) Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean.
    (4) Push it back fully into the pipe.
    (5) Pull it out and check that the fluid level is in the HOT
    range.

    If the level is not within the range, add new fluid.

    Fluid type: ATF TYPE T–IV

    NOTICE:
    Do not overfill.

    Well, that's how I've been checking it and it shows that its low. I'll go drive it around one more time and check again and then probably throw that last quart in.

    it was definitely low. i put the quart in and it now shows just in the hot range and shifts a little smoother. i'm not sure why my guy didn't add the last quart, but i expect as much from any shop.
