Does anyone know if there is an auto trans kick down adjustment for a 2012 4 spd gen 2 ?
or is it fully electronic shifting ?
it wont even allow me 1/2 throttle before it kicks down on a grade

    All electronic control.
Gone are the days of a rod driven kick down gear...

I guess that puts me at the mercy of the dealer system then
I am baffled at why these Tacoma's are so popular and over-rated/overpriced
in reality they are no more reliable than any other vehicle i have had
in fact my 300k F150 can run circles around these tacos [/rant]

Sounds pretty normal, the 4 cyl makes most of it's power at higher RPM.
It's always a balancing act with automatics between efficiency, drivability, shift quality, power, and longevity, unfortunately they can't please everyone.
Also most newer automatics do alot of adapting and learning as components wear and based on how they are driven so you can have 2 of the same vehicle with transmissions that behave differently just because they are driven differently.

A Prius will run circles around your truck, so that's not saying much. Why did you buy a model with the most ancient engine and worst power-to-weight ratio in Toyota's line-up, then complain about it?

The engine and 4-speed tranmission are making the best of the widely-spaced gear ratios and 159hp, so shift manually and stay in a lower gear. You paid for the whole tachometer, use the whole tachometer.

The idea of straight up flogging the 4cyl Tacoma sounds fun to me lol. With the V6 I feel like I'm always super light on the pedal.

My F350 has 325k miles with 35s mounted and gets 19 mpg and has about the same seat of the pants pull on take off once the turbo lights up. Stik shift is fun with better control IMO and the governed idle makes take off with a 10k load seem effortless and my ex girl friend drove it with ease the first time.

Ford has Electric Shift Solenoids on trucks since 1984

Ok yeah, I drove it up the mountain again yesterday and it is totally driveable, I think it is tuned for fuel efficiency and the shifting could be optimized with a computer re-flash tune
    Just miss the stick shift
I was hoping someone knew of a fix , like maybe the TPS or the MAF is sending a wrong signal, those are the only two sensors I can think of to the computer to tell it when to shift based on load demand ,
I found a lot of info online about Gen 3 shifting upgrades because they have a very similar "problem" with the 6 spd auto "hunting" around on grades shifting up and down annoyingly because they are tuned for fuel efficiency not for performance, with a gen 1 you can adjust a kickdown cable but nothing for Gen 2

the "antique" 4cyl choice is for fuel economy, and I am not in a hurry to win the rat race, if I was after luxury and performance I would be looking at full size trucks with a V8 or diesel, not a V6 tacoma gas hog, cramped mini truck
IMO it would benefit from a shifting performance reflash, no need to accuse me of "complaining" millions of truck owners do performance upgrades and repairs without being accused of unfounded complaining
....and a Prius does not even belong in this conversation, its a car, and a very bad choice of car at that

I would prefer a schtick shift, the gen 1 4cyl stick was great sold it a 300k
but in my area of the country(west slope CO) there are very few low mileage trucks for sale and if there ever is anything I would want they are way way WAY overpriced ( I mean crazy overpriced) .
After searching seriously for over 2 years, I discovered that to get anything I had to travel to one of the nearest big cities and overpay there where there is something available.
Finding a Tacoma for sale with under 250,000 mi. is very rare , and even finding a 6 foot bed was near impossible, they are almost all the double cab 5' bed now so getting a ext cab 6' bed with 4cyl stick shift, gen 2 with under 100k is like looking for bigfoot out in the desert, I would still be looking
In other words , you would be lucky to find anything ( even high mileage) and you better act fast because it will be sold before you can take time to think about how overpriced it is
and I am retired and keeping on budget with lowlow debt so I was lucky to find this taco to drive myself around and give the f150 a break from daily driver duty and only use the 150 when I really need a truck for things like pulling a trailer.

    search exhausted
evidently no computer tune reflash shifting performance upgrade for this "antique" gen2, 4cyl auto,
