I finally got a chance to use my autoLSD on my truck. Unfortunately it wasn't the best experience.

I was backing up a gravel/wet dirt packed incline in my truck. My bed was basically empty. I was in reverse and slowly started backing up. Then I realized I wasn't moving anymore, so I pressed on the gas. Still no movement but I saw the trac light coming on.

I hit he button to turn on autoLSD and tried again. At this point I heard rocks getting hit off the wall but still no movement. So I got out to look and saw one back tire had dug in about 4 inches and was in wet dirt and the other tire had barely dug up.

Now I wish I would have gotten out before I hit the autoLSD button. But maybe I wasn't hitting the gas enough. I didn't want to keep pelting rocks off the wall.

I was able to put it in drive down the hill and back up again with more momentum and a slightly different path with success.

    Any similar experiences?

Buying a locker to back up a driveway might be a little pricy, your one tire was probably too deep for your autoLSD to help you. It may have worked if you had it on for your first attempt.

I'm surprised that you have auto LSD but no locker, I thought that all non locker tacomas had a mechanical LSD

Or putting it into 4wd would have worked

No experience yet with the ALSD. I've always wondered what situations I should be using it. Haven't needed it yet.

Question to all: When would be the proper time to engage ALSD? Launching a boat?

Not true. I've heard guys use it when 4wd wouldn't engage and it got them unstuck.

Leave the scoop and prerunner jokes outta here. That's not the intent of this thread.

The 2nd paragraph wasn't referring to you, just the 1st. Read the post a little further up.

The hood scoop and prerunner comment was not aimed at you. Just in general to others making the comments.

Obviously autoLSD didn't help me here, but maybe I was using it wrong or not a good situation for it.

No idea with reference to boat ramps.

I'll add more pics when my connection doesn't suck.

Maybe your bumper was dragging a bit. Reverse is a good way to get up a hill in adverse conditions in 2WD, for some reason it generally works better than trying to go forward.

Auto-LSD is a braking function, it tries to brake the spinning wheel with the ABS system. From my understanding it isn't instantly responsive, though. You have to get the RPM's up for it to engage. Hence you couldn't just grind your way out of gravel, you'd have to stomp on the skinny pedal pretty good.

Lol... On a serious note, I've tried using Auto LSD in reverse and it never seems to do much of anything. It does make me wonder if it even functions in reverse? The manual doesn't seem to address this.
