why have they introduced an auto-downshifting in their auto-tranny? irritating. can it be programmed out? don't like driving it. might trade it in. my 1st toyota and 1st brand new vehicle.

You may was to describe this better. There is not an automatic transmission on this planet that doesn’t automatically downshift (unless it’s broken). And if you have a manual, it can’t automatically downshift.

Toyota didn’t necessarily “incorporate downshifting”. They did incorporate a way to increase fuel economy by way of shifting. That in turn helps keep the engine in it’s more efficient rev range. There are products (tuners) and other things out there to help correct this issue, but I’m not sure how you may feel about those items on a new truck.

mutely, i understand, but their downshifting drags the truck down. you can feel the shifting. no coasting at at all.

You could always throw it into neutral, but I believe the downshifting is to save brake pad life. Not sure on that, just always assumed it.

People that use their truck as I dunno...a truck...find this a benefit because we have loads in our trucks or are towing and don't want to go 100 down every hill.

People that want a car, go buy a car.

An unpopular question here. But, why by if you don't like the way it drives?
As mentioned, downshifting is not only necessary, but a small amount of engine braking is nice too. If you're extremely sensitive to these such attributes, a manual is the only option.

chew, i think you are not understanding the characteristics of this downshifting. it's an automatic. but it downshifts like you would a manual transmission. it has no coasting to a stop. it's not an option. what truck do you know that does this?

Let's see if it's engine braking or the flex lock torque converter you object to.
Try it in S3. This will increase engine braking but locks out flex lock.

These new auto's are a different beast nowadays. While dependability has gone up (for most) quirkyness seems to be the norm nowadays.

I think they're just priming our psyche to be grateful for a CVT but I'm a confirmed conspiracy theorist. It's my motto. CT's everywhere.

That doesn't seem normal, my 2017 doesn't do that. How fast are you coming up on a stop/ how hard are you braking? I can roll up on a red light smooth if I am casually coming up on it; if I am coming in hot, sometimes I can feel the downshifting, but nothing like you are describing. These transmissions do take a little time to adjust to your driving habits though, the exact mileage to do so seems to vary on how consistent of a driver you are.

My wife's 2014 GMC would do that though. Would go from 4 to 2 when braking which would throw the RPM up and cause the truck to lurch forward (especially when coming off the brake).

It wouldn't be something I'd like to tolerate either but maybe there's an explanation since other's haven't expressed displeasure with THAT feature.

There's a thousand smart assed remarks to add, I'm not going to today, #proudofmyself.

Mine downshifts as you describe. I do wish it was smarter about it, but I like it nonetheless. I'd have gone MT if they'd had one when I needed the truck.

It's mountainous here. Brakes wear out. Nice to have engine braking to help out.

Maybe you wanted a Prius. They're both made by Toyota.
