I have a MT and love it. I've heard massive complaints about the AT (probably why OVTune is so popular), however I haven't driven a 3rdGen AT to compare for myself.

I have an auto, little wonky at first till they did the update now it’s fine. I enjoy the 3.5 much more then my previous 4.0.

Was dead set on a manual but once I test drove it I didn’t like it. Reminded me of driving my old 97’ TJ and just didn’t feel right to me. Was also used to driving a 12’ Jetta 5 speed with the 2.5 which shifts like a hot knife in butter so that may have played a factor into not enjoying the manual in the Taco as much.

automatic gets way more complaints, but theres also alot more of them.

biggest pro of getting a manual is you can look down on everyone that drives an auto and suck off each other in threads like this.

2019 SR with the V6 and auto. Still has less than 2000 miles, and if I drive in D, it feels "lurchy", so I've kind of resigned myself to waiting for more miles to pass judgement based on comments I've skimmed here and there.

I the meantime (and I don't know if this affects the "learning curve" of the transmission control module/ECM?), I like using the "S"mode, which pretty seems to calm down the shifting a lot.

I am pretty sure that I've yet to feel a lurch in S6. Of course, when I pay attention to conditions, I generally modulate between S3 and S6 myself, but sometime I forget I am in S6 and get into some traffic which allows the transmission to perform the downshifts to 2,3,4,5 and that seems to result in a better ride than trying to let "D" mode handle the shifts.

I didn't understand S mode that well until I watched a few youtoob videos and read some comments here and on youtoob. Now that I understand and have some experience, I have to say I kind of like S mode. It's no manual, but at least you can influence the shifting (limit basically) when pumping the brakes in rush hour backups.

At first I really wanted to hate the transmission, but it turns out now that it's broken me in, I do like it.

Of course, feeling obligated to check the fluid level right away didn't make me happy and preconditioned me to by nitpicky, but I got through that (was only "low" by no more than 8 oz in my case). If nothing else, "ATF-gate" forced me to learn more about the truck right off than I would otherwise have been inclined to do. For instance: I got Techstream up and running as a side effect, which will only be handy later on as I get deeper into ownership.

MT people complain about the AT more than people who actually own an AT do.

MT. I like to row my own. Its good. Agree with reverse gearing issues. Is the hill assist a 2017+ item? I dont see it in my 16.

For Manual Trans, 2016 and 2017 SR and Sport have it, after 2017 only the Sport. When you take your foot off the brake it will hold for a few seconds before releasing, you don't have to turn anything on.

Standards complain about automatics, so there will be more complaints against them. Not because standard owners have antidotal opinions mind you.

    That 6th gear is useless.

16k miles with the AT and I had enough of it. As a car guy, I always thought the idea of a manual pickup truck was rather weird/stupid.

Held out hope for two years that they would make some software update to fix the brains behind it to no avail.

Happy as hell with a MT now, unfortunately I didn’t go this route the first time around. But it's okay.

One's arguably better in high traffic areas but has been known to have undesirable shifting.

The other has full control of the shifting, lower gearing but has a tall reverse gear.

Forum divas gonna put their forum scores aside and contribute?

This thread is all wrong! There is nothing wrong with any of the transmissions in these trucks. Any and all complaints are operator related!

    "My transmission shifts funny!"
"My transmission tried to kill me!"
"My transmission reverse gear is too tall!"
"My clutch pedal squeaks!" (not technically a transmission issue)
"It's to difficult to check my fluid level!"
"My transmission wasn't filled all the way!"

You get my point! I have not read one transmission failure on this site! All operator complaints.

I for one love the transmission in my truck. It makes my truck more enjoyable to drive. Maybe some people need to find what makes their trucks enjoyable to drive and stop all the useless bitching!

I would have to say the automatic I owned the auto for like 3 months 2018 .The shifting drove me bananas and constant buzzing since it like to stay in the 2k range .I have 2020 manual now love it . no more lag put in gear and it goes .
