Ok so I saw a Chevy Silverado yesterday and the owner used the key FOB auto tailgate function. Holy crap, I didn't understand the usefulness of this until I saw it in person. Darn, toyota totally needs this on the Tacomas.

Toyota gave us a power driver seat in the tacoma in like 2019(?). It'll be 2050 before they decided you rate that level of usefulness as an option.

They should buck the trend and make a factory flatbed / utility tray

For me, that would be a total waste of money, and just one more thing to break.

They do that in Australia I’m pretty sure. At least they used to

People have successfully added this feature to the Tacoma. However, there's only one "company" that manufactures the kit (that I know of) and I in no way recommend buying from this person. There's plenty of documentation on TW regarding her lack of customer service and poor quality control...

Also note, the link above does not include all of the parts you'll need. But if you search Youtube with her company name and tailgate opener, you should find all of the info you need.

Good Point, although I said the same thing about power windows and I have never had them break on me. Nor have I had any issues with automatic rear hatches.

I wouldn't have any concerns of it breaking... however, I could certainly see where it could accidently drop your tailgate onto something, either damaging your tailgate or what it hits. For example, a person could accidentally hit the button when backed up against a parking garage wall, another car in a parking lot, a trailer hitch, plants, retaining wall, etc... Buttons can easily be pushed in your pocket.

Have you ever accidentally pressed your lock or unlock button?

Plenty of times! No lie, when I had the factory fob, I used to push the buttons through my pocket all the time. Usually when carrying something (like a box) against my thigh. YMMV.

I watched a video about a month ago of a guy who couldn't access his Chevy truck bed because the automatic system broke. There was no override for manual entry. Trying to find the video...

    Yeah
When I’m not in my rig at work they stick me in a 3500 Chevy with auto tail gate and I’ve personally dropped it onto the trailers landing foot denting it [the tailgate] pretty good.
Personally I wouldn’t want this “feature”.

That was my immediate concern when GMC rolled out this commercial.

I wonder how many owners have dropped the tailgate into their own hitch...?

They just need to make an auto retracting hitch!

This is how we end up with autobots

GM might better serve their customers by building a truck that wouldn't get the shit end of the stick in a bashup with a Ram or F-Series.
