I’m looking at buying a 98 Tacoma that’s come up for sale here local to me. My only gripe is it was originally a 2wd automatic truck. He’s swapped in a factory manual transmission and transfer and all other parts from a donor 98. There is an engine code displayed but is for the automatic transmission. My question is there away to flash the ecu to erase this code so it won’t come on. The truck looks to be in great condition otherwise. I’m trying to figure out if it’ll be a good buy or if I should stay away from it.

I believe you’d need to swap the ECM with one from a manual. There is no way to reprogram these.

    Welcome to the Forum .

It comes down to price and if you have the skills or friends that can help fix these problems.

I really wonder how many other problems your gonna find. Maybe another 4x4 swap the owner just gave up and decided to sell.

Without Knowing just what code I have no idea if work around is possible.

As long as the cause of the problem is not fixed the code will always return.

Most Pre Runner swaps to manual the ECM is changed to the manual ECM

If you have emission inspections no matter what code if the light is on it does not pass in my state.

    Good luck.

Did the mechanical work then found the electrical was far to hard and gave up??

OP make sure the 4x4 system works correct as well.

This could very easy turn into a interesting project.

Yea that’s what I’m trying to avoid. I don’t want to fall into a rabbit hole with this one. He’s put 64,000 miles on the transmission and transfer case sense he’s got it put together. So I feel like it’s gotta at least run alright. I’m just not to sure if it’s worth the risk.

It always comes down to price and the new buyer having the skills or friends to get things up to speed..

Good luck no matter how it plays out.

I have bought a few botched projects over the years the owners just gave up.
