Manual says to "Dry fill" with 6.9 quarts of fluid and "Drain and refill" with 2.5 quarts. Does dry fill mean what the entire system holds when taking the tranny pan off? Drain and refill means to replace only whatever comes out via the drain plug? Prolly obvious to most but just want to make sure. Thanks

When I pulled my pan and changed the tranny filter I got a little over 7 qts out. So you have the right figures I'd say.

Reason I asked in the OP, I'm still not feeling too good about the way the tranny is working. I get a little shuddering type of feeling (can feel it in the foot on the gas pedal) when slowly increasing speed around the 25-30 mph range, and especially when slowing down in the same speed range. I had the pan pulled and refilled with tranny fluid by a very good mechanic. He said there was nothing wrong with the fluid that came out and there were no metal bits in the pan or anything to indicate that the tranny is breaking down (truck has 150k on it and I bought it recently). Was thinking that perhaps switching to Amsoil synthetic may make a difference. So....sounds like I would have to pull the pan to get it all out rather than just pulling the drain plug which I hate to do given I just paid to have the pan pulled. Any thoughts? Thanks

dont do it. i know it sounds odd but most trans dont like all the fluid changed at once. drain and fill is fine . i recomend drain and fill , if fluid is very dark reapeat in 5 k miles. almost sounds like a driveline problem. try shimming carrier bearing and see if it helps. mine did same thing before i added 3/4 in spacers

So you are saying to simply drain whatever comes out of the drain plug (2.5 quarts) and replace with the Amsoil and then do the same thing a few more times later? Is it ok to mix the tranny fluids like this? I have no idea what a carrier bearing is; please tell me more i.e. where it is and how hard is it to shim? Thanks!

When I installed my Hayden cooler I also drained/refilled the AT fluid at the same time. I let it drain for a while and in the end it was just a tad over 4 quarts. I put about 4.5 back in after plumbing in my transmission cooler. Not sure if this information helps.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
No, a dry fill is when the tranny is completely void of fluid, ie: fresh off the assembly line.

You will get the 2.5 qrts regardless of the plug or pan is pulled. There will still be fluid in the valve body, torque convertor, etc.
