So according to this thread, I should be able to put a transfer case from an automatic 5ZE-FE into my manual 5ZE-FE. Before I pull the trigger on this, I just want to confirm that this is correct. The "new" TC is from an automatic 4Runner Limited.

Thoughts? Anything else should know or consider? Thanks in advance!

Does your truck have the J-shifter t-case or the push button? IIRC, the manuals came with either a J-shifter or the button. Not sure, but I remember reading that somewhere.

The auto is probably the A340F, and off the top of my head there's the R150F and the w59 manual transmissions that were available, though I never made a point to memorize which ones were available when or in what trucks.

This also might help, if you haven't seen it already.

Thanks @jbrandt. Below is an image of the TC I want to install. Guessing by the top, I'm pretty sure this is the j-shifter version (it supposably fits 1996-98).

@foothill96tacoma , yeah, I don't want to make is sound like I'd be able to give you a definitive answer, since it's been many moons since I've taken a transmission/t-case off (was on my 86 turbo 4Runner for an auto --> manual swap).

I know that for the folks doing the Prerunner-4wd swaps, the consensus is to get the J-shifter and manual hubs as that greatly simplifies the wiring because everything is manual. If you already have the push button t-case, I think that would complicate things in the sense that you'd need a new shifter to match the j-shifter form the "new" tc. If you currently have the j-shifter, that's probably a best case scenario.

Hopefully someone else smarter than me chimes in to confirm.

Following up... as it turns out, the TC I wanted to install (see above) would not work, as it had the push button setup that my 1996 rig does not have. I wish that these transfer cases had numbers as readily identifiable as the transmissions do.

Anyone have a j-shifter manual transfer case they wanna sell me? :)

FYI I managed to pick up a J-shifter manual TC that seems like it will work well. And learned a lot in the process. Thanks everyone!
