normal but annoying as shit imo. it would be nice to be able to coast without the truck slowing its self down all the time.

uh no. DAC is only able to be turned on in 4LO, keeps the truck under 5mph.

Press to gas slightly and it prevents downshifting.

Hoping that it is not against rules to add to an old thread, but I have comments/questions.

I know this forum, like all the good automotive forums, have a guru or two. I believe that @gearcruncher is your tranny guru.

If I'm reading this thread correctly, the 2nd Gen Toyota Tacoma transmission will automatically downshift itself to a lower gear. At least from 4OD to 4th on it's own. I assume the human could also select 3rd as the next manual downshift? Apparently, this does not 'hurt' the transmission or the clutches?

That YouTube Toyota mechanic the "The Car Care Nut" does not like transmision downshifts, and acts like they are a major source of wear-n-tear on the unit. To the point that he appears to not want the human to select any gear but 4OD for daily driving. I like to do some engine braking as a matter of course. When getting off a hwy, I like to 4OD-4-3 for engine braking.

Assuming I do regular tranny oil changes, is downshifting a hurt on the transmission unit, or are the built stout enough?

These are very stout transmissions. Don’t listen to some fuckwits on YouTube (listen to me instead, lol).

The A750 is an awesome tranny. Engineered by Toyota to hold up to factory supercharger tundra v8 applications. They last a long time behind the 4.0 V6.

    All excellent replies .
I will add that when you take your foot off the gas as your are going down a hill , your fuel injectors also turn off .
Depending on the speed during your decent , the locking feature inside your torque converter also turns off or partially uncouples .
Add a downshift into this mix and it feels like someone is riding your brake pedal hard . Thats what I fealt when the truck was new .
The joys of a completely computer controlled engine and transmission.
Get you into the highest gear as quick as possible to save fuel .
This computer controlled marriage of the engine and transmission come with a lot of driveability complaints .

How does Toyota try and get around this ?
The transmission has adaptive learning . Basicly , the truck learns how you like it to upshift and downshift
Have any of you guys noticed now that you have a few miles on your truck , that aggressive downshifting is hardly noticeable in comparison
to when the truck was new ? This being said , some transmissions are new and the adaptive tables have to be learned or perhaps the adaptive strategy was erased and new tables are currently being written . Results will vary for sure

I went through the same dread when my truck started doing this the first time I took it up to the White Mountains in Maine and New Hampshire. 2,000 miles into ownership, I thought I had a bad transmission with "the hunts" on my hands coming down the winding mountain roads up there: downshift - downshift - downshift. Then it would go back to normal. Researched and learned it's the intelligence in the A750 transmission doing its thing trying to control your downhill speeds. I think I also read that it takes steering inputs in account.
