I know this thread is a bit old (Im doing recon for my buddies 3rd gen right now) but pro tip for the next time - buy 10+ ft of PVC hose. OD roughly the same as the ID of the fill hole, think I used 5/8" OD for my 2nd gen. Snake the hose down through the engine bay, make sure the end is clean, insert into the fill hole. Funnel ATF in through the engine bay

Working on my buddies 3rd gen this past weekend - it was interesting to see they have more of an actual filter material in the strainer. The 2nd gens is very clearly just a mesh strainer, but this seemed to have some paper/cloth element to it.

Also note if you live in the salt belt the tops of the pan bolts are exposed from above. Take your time and use lots of PB or else

*pic is of the new Beck Arnley aftermarket filter he bought.

those vice grips on the bolt threads are making the mechanic in me cringe.

all the WS spec fluids are compatible. I'm probably going to go with the Aisin fluid next time. The Toyota WS fluid is pretty pricey and hard to find. although, if anyone knows where to find it for a good price, let us know! I don't trust the Amazon/Ebay retailers. Don't want to risk buying counterfeit ATF.

I changed the trans filter in my 2016 at 30,000. I use OEM Aisin WS ATF. I just bought another case of 12 quarts for $88.00 From eEuroparts.com Every third oil change I drain the pan and refill with about 3.5 quarts of ATF and 3 to 4 OZ of Lubegard Platinum.
