My question is why do you want a manual transmission in the 2nd gen Taco's? The automatic is a far better and more reliable tranny than the six speed is and they get the same gas milage. No clutch to replace and since there hasn't been a run at the tranny shop on them the jury is still out as to which will hold up longer. My bet is on the auto when regular maintenance is performed on both.

Also, you must not know anything about that five speed auto. It can be shifted like a manual and it will hold the gear you shift into. I shift it like a manual all the time and it provides fantastic engine breaking especially when my crawler is engaged.

Now, if you insist in doing this swap be prepaired for one headache of a computer swap. The two do not share the same controls with the computer, not to mention the park/neutral safety switch crap either. No mechanic is going to be able to just "flash" your computer to make it work either. There is more than just a program that will be an issue. I'm doing a 4.7 V8 swap on my truck and I'm betting it'll be easier to do that.

can it be done? Sure. How much money do you have? It aint gonna be easy. That computer you have is going to want the information from that tranny and now it wont get it. You'll have more CEL than you'll know what to do with.

Trade it in and get a manual truck if your heart is set on rowing through the gears with your arms and legs. Now-a-days there is no real advantage to having a manual transmission since the automatics can do the same job better and more efficiently to.

I've had people tell me they can wheel better with their manual trans truck than I can with my auto but I dont burn clutches. Put a nice trans cooler on their and all your worries go away. :D

The $425 it cost me to have my tranny serviced is why i will NEVER buy an automatic in a truck again,i cant do the tranny service my self but i am pretty sure i could do a clutch R&R,

I've been considering the swap in my own truck. When I was younger, I did the swap in other vehicles. The hardest one was a 96 Ford Probe (Mazda drivetrain). There were a lot of electronics. The automatic had gone out on it, and it would have been 3 thousand bucks to put that back together. An entire conversion from a salvage yard was $600 bucks. I had to jumper the switch from the old trans to make it run. In all, it took a broke Airman (me) a week to do. I can't imaging that a Tacoma is too much harder than a front wheel drive car with electronics. Everyone said not to do it. Was happy that I did. The car I had done before was an 86 Tercel. Easy too. Punch outs were already there for all of the conversion gear, including the pedal in both cars.
