Is it bad for the tranny to use them a lot? I wouldn't be trying to drag race with it or anything like that

Mostly off road I put in in 1st low to crawl down hills. If I'm dirt road banging or snow drifting in 2wd coming into a fast corner I always kick it down to get my rpms up around 3000 so I can control the slide, same as you would with a manual. Sometimes on pavement I drop it down if there's a long descent.

I've never had an issue with it... Mine seems to work just fine. But I have a 2.7 Four speed.

Mostly D. Sometimes manually select R also, seems to help when trying to go backwards.

This truck sucks going uphill. I switch over to 4 even 3 or 2 if necessary going up hill.

Haven't had the Tacoma for long, but my old truck I used the gears a lot. Off-roading I'm usually in a lower gear when going through mud/sand etc.

When towing, I keep out of overdrive with any kind of heavy load, but I have not pulled anything over about 1500 pounds with this truck and Drive worked fine for that.

I also use engine braking on steep hills, but never get to use that here in Florida.
