I have taken 1 outlet out at the bottom and want to replace it with a usb. The only thing I don't know is the wiring. The gray connector looks like it has 3 wires in it. Does anyone know which all three colored wires are, meaning, hot/switched/etc?

    Thanks

Post a picture, its going to be the larger two wires.

Just use the wires that go directly to the socket. The center is positive the edge is negative. It should be very obvious once you look again.

    Could be lighted?

I don't remember but I think it was; probably one of the changes going into 2001+

Here are a couple pics. There is a red going into 1 side of connector and a white/black and white wire going into the other side of connector. I am going to take a guess and say the red is ground. The other 2 are

I believe that's a combined ground. You are fine using the the red as positive, just double check with a meter if you are unsure.

Its probably for the better, makes it easy to see. If you don't have a meter, follow where each wire goes into to cigg lighter. I explained what they are above.

Will do today. BTW, is there an easy way to take the gray plastic off the connector itself?

I just undid both the 12v outlet on my extra center bezel, as well as my current one last night (went from wood trim to black). Took but a few minutes total, including taking pics.

The outlet itself slides forward and out. After removing those, the "holder" has a tab that gets pushed in, and out comes the holder. As for the grey connector, it just slides off the 2 tabs. Everything easily comes apart and goes back together again.

Are you trying to take apart the connector itself? That wiring leads back to your fuse panel.

Yes, I was thinking about taking the connector apart-but I think I will just make 2 small jumpers.

I did make 2 jumpers and it actually made it easier to plug the new usb/volt meter in. Thanks for all the replies.

    Had a 2002 DC, now a 2004 DC.
Resurrecting an old thread--if I wanted to tie into these wires (temperature gauge) would I go red to red and black to white? I am new to this wiring, but I understand the red on the truck should be live, and the white ones grounds.

A positive wire would only be hot depending where it originates from.

This means some apply voltage if; the vehicle has the accessories turned on, or if the illumination is on, or tied to the battery and hot all the time.

I would follow the directions of your temperature gauge and go from there.

You can always "add a fuse" directly from the fuse panel under the steering column. Would only recommend if the current draw is really small, but it'd be an easy and convenient way to add power to something.
