Average cost for timing belt replacement?

So I called my dealership to get an idea of what I should expect to pay for this. The service receptionist informed me they're running a special for parts and labor for $299. Sounds like a hell of a deal to me since I paid $725 to have the belt done on my old Isuzu Rodeo a few years ago. My timing belt is currently functioning fine, but I'm at 100,800 miles and read it's recommended to be replaced at 90,000. Figure I'll go ahead and get it done since I make long trips to the mountains and Mexico and would rather not get stranded halfway in between. What does a timing belt replacement typically cost?

The cost of parts is more than the quoted price on a job that is done right. My first thought is this price does not include new belts,hoses ,water pump,or thermostat. Add these on to their price and then you will know about how much the job is really going to cost.

 

I've never heard of needing to change out a water pump, thermostat or hoses before. What do they have to do with a timing belt? I'm not a mechanic, but I just don't see the relation. Can you elaborate on the importance of why you feel those also need to be done? Thanks

 

Belts, hoses, water pump, t-stat are all easy to get to when the timing belt is changed so get it all done at the same time, this is typical on a lot of vehicles..saves you money down the road

Murphy's Law is relevant here, you go in and replace just the timing belt, your water pump will go out in a very short amount of time... Damn that Murphy... and then you have to have it all ripped out and put back together = $$$ in labor.

RockAuto has a complete kit, for your truck, with water pump (Kit Includes: Water Pump, Idler Bearing, Tensioner Bearing, Hydraulic Tensioner, Timing Belt) from $145 - $200, just the timing belt and idler is $60 - $110. Plus we get a discount on them.

I bet that the dealership is not including anything in that deal except the timing belt and idler.

 

This is the reason. I like to stick with O.E. for this job,no rebuilt water pumps or O.E.M. replacement kits. O.E. kit will cost you $350-$425. I would also have the cooling system flushed and new coolant added, also a good time to replace radiator cap. This is not cheap,I am. This saves money in the long run. I HATE being 300 miles from home towing a boat or having my dog in his cubby and being broke down in the mountains. Mr. Murphy always shows up at the worst times!

 

I got price quotes from $745 to $1100.

 

I just got prices recently ( I am at 90,000 miles) and they ranged between $675 and $790 from 3 dealers and 1 independent garage.
They all included the time belt, 3 drive belts, tensioners and pullies and water pump.
I think the radiator gets drained when the water pump hose is disconnected, so it may not include an actual flush, but at least fresh coolant. The price did not include hoses or thermostat.

Why must there always be some smart ass tool making comments like this? You did read that I'm not a mechanic, right? I'm hear to learn...not insult others. To all those who did post something helpful I appreciate it.

Anyhow, the dealership said the water pump was in excellent condition and it was either replaced with a previous owner and not reported or someone took really good care of the truck. $312 later I have a new timing belt and a vote of confidence that I found a diamond in the rough when purchasing this truck a month ago.

and you need to tell everyone on here the name and address of the dealership (Toyota?) that did a timing belt for a 3.4 for $312.00
btw I am not a mechanic either, just dirty fingernails since I was 10.

 

Desert Toyota in Tucson, Arizona. I was just calling for prices and the service receptionist told me they were running the special. I said, "sign me up!".

 

I just priced out the parts here from the local Toyota dealer, and parts alone are $275. Parts included T-belt, 3 drivebelts, water pump, coolant. I would also replace the thermostat at the same time, but it is easy to get to, so you could save the $20 for later if you'd like.
As far as the water pump, just get it done now. I used to be a tech for Toyota and those water pumps are notorious for going out @ 80-110k. In my opinion, it's not worth doing the timing belt, then having the water pump leak 10k miles down the road. At that point, your paying for all the same labor to do the timing belt, plus an additional 1 hr labor to r&r the water pump. Just not worth it.
As for the parts and labor special, I'd jump on it.

Sounds to me like a special deal to draw in customers for attempted upsale work. Our dealership did that a lot. Draw in customers with a great deal to get them in the door, then work on trying to upsell things like tires, brakes, alignments, suspension repair, etc. Sometimes you don't make a sale, sometimes you do. Sounds like you got one heck of a deal!

 

158,000 miles Looking to do timing belt, water pump, thermostat, upper and lower radiator hose, other 3 belts, upkeep. When should the upper and lower idler pulleys be replaced? There a way to see how they are doing, to save me the $180 in parts for another xx,xxx miles?

I know this thread is a bit old, but im wondering how much I should be paying for a timing Belt, waterpump, and pulley replacement in 2023?

 

Seeing this is in the 1st Gen section, we will struggle with an answer. Best to do is call around to a few shops, dealers to see what they are charging.
