Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I couldn't help notice when I'm driving it says my average MPG is 15.6 but when I turn the engine off it says the average is 17.8 MPG. Do I need to re calibrate something?

I bought the taco new in Oct. It currently has 1.4k miles on it. I drive like a grandpa at either speed limit (65mph on freeway in CA) or a little below that. I mostly drive in the city (like a grandpa as well) about 20 miles to and from work daily. Why is my average MPG so low?

    Thanks in advanced!

The average while driving on that display is for the tank. The average you see when you shut the truck off is for just that trip, from the time you turn it on til the time you shut it off.

When you turn engine off it shows average MPG of that driving session. The average MPG read-out shows your tank average.

Thanks for the info. So if I understand this correctly, the MPG that shows while I'm driving is an average of all my trips combined from that tank?

Also, is there a way to see how many gallons are left in the tank? When I fill up gas I never know when to stop the pump. I know the fuel capacity is about 21 gallons but I don't know how much to fill say when I'm at 30 miles left.

Yes, it is basically the average of all the trips you had for the current tank. You can customize the information screen to show the trip average MPG as well.

For the gallons left, just use the fuel gauge. If it is 1/4 full, you can fill up to 3/4 of 21 gallon (~16 gallon) and so on. Using the same calculation, each 1/8 line on the gauge rough correspond to 2.6 gallons.

The low fuel display will come up on the screen when you have about 3 gallons left.

I have a 2019 Off Road 4x4 auto - drive is about 14 miles to work half highway / half city I barely get 16 mpg, most of time under 16. I am not over 65 mph on highway. Stock size tires - disappointed less power than my gen 2 with less power and at least 2 mpg less. Toyota did not finish the engineering on this engine/ trans combo.

I can get 17-18 MPG in full city driving (in a relatively "hilly town" as well) if I am light on the gas pedal. Maybe you should as the dealer to check the truck.

Are you guys serious? You don’t know when to stop the pump when filling up, without trying to calculate how much to put in? I use the same method before the fancy screen displays, keep pumping until you feel the back pressure and the pump latch kicks off. That’s full.

OP might be using a gas station that requires you to pay for the gas in advance. They ask you how many gallons you will be buying, you pay, they turn on the gas for that many gallons. These stations are rare, but I once bought from such a station.

These trucks seems to vary quite a bit with MPG, I get better than my old 2nd Gens.

After a year of driving my taco and 9000 miles, my overall average is 19.4mpg. My daily round trip is 25 miles with half freeway which includes about 1000 ft rise (and fall) and the rest city streets.

The occasional long trip with sustained freeway speed (72mph), I’ve hit 24mpg. The other end where it’s lots of short trips, etc it drops to about 16mpg.

I just put on new Methods and Wildpeaks (same size as stock, P version), and have almost 2 tanks consumed....numbers haven’t really changed, which is what I had expected.

Yeah the one I encountered was like that. You go inside to pay, they turn on the gas for the gallons of gas you purchased, you go back to the pump and start pumping. I dont really know if the pumps stop when the tank is full or would it overfill and spill gas, or if you can get a refund for the remaining gas if the pump stops. Best case it would stop and you would need to walk back in an get a refund :).

This was in an isolated rural community that I was driving through. I had to buy gas from there due to poor planing on my end (there was no other station nearby). I assume they mostly sell gas to farmers who probably buy gas in bulk and fill containers, hence the prepayment for gallons of gas.

I ran into one like that, they made me come inside and put an initial charge of $50 on my card then they issued a credit for the difference after I was done filling the tank.

When I last filled up gas one of the pumps wasn't taking my card so I had to go inside to see the clerk. She said whatever amount I put in I'd get a refund back to my card for whatever remaining credit I had left when the pump stops.

That's so weird. I still don't understand it unless the pumps don't have a card machine built in or the pump shut on/off is manual. Swiping your card at the pump is the equivalent of prepaying which should unlock the shutoff allowing you to pump gas... Thanks for the reply, tho.
