This. The exact degree you get does not matter and there are people in aviation with non-related degrees. There are also people working in other industries with degrees that have nothing to do with their field of work. Some may say to get something in a different field so you have something to fall back on if you lose a medical. The only issue there is if that happens years later what you learned may not even be relevant so the whole idea of a backup may not work well.

I did the aviation degree route by earning a 2-year degree at a local community college, earned my Commercial and CFI before becoming an instructor, used the employee discounts to save me money on my multi, CFII, MEI and then eventually paid as I went to get my 4-year degree online while working full time. If something happens to me at this point I think my overall experience could lead me into another type of aviation job and having the degree will fill the check mark on the qualification box. If I need an actual degree for another field, well then I will have to return to school.

Probably the best backup in this career is to have a spouse that has a good job. :D

I have a Bachelors in Advertising Photography. Not exactly a streamlined route into the aviation world, but I have a decent job and no one cares what I have my degree in. Do what you think it interesting and it will all work out in the end.

Yeah, had to look it up a little, former AAF field, sounds like it is a hotbed of historical warbird stuff.

Hell, I've never even been to Oshkosh. Need to take the boy there when he is older.

...^^^... Exactly .... We have a lot of smaller things than Oshkosh (Oshkosh is king) ... but some very different here things too ... we do have people from all over the US come here for the shows ... and most of the shows are free too ... a lot of support here for these things too ... many of the WW2 planes that tour the country are hangered in this area or in Dallas, TX area.

The politicians tried to make PDK a smaller version of Atlanta Airport ... but locals said no and PDK has stayed just the right size for a fun place to visit on a sunny day and watch the planes.

If you come here and I am working at the air show or watching the show ... I will buy you a cheeseburger at the DownWind Cafe there.

PS ... A little more private and unknown history of PDK ... Epps family and friends of Epps (from EPPS FBO @ PDK) & Koch Bros. from their GA Pacific Co. ... & Coke & UPS ... here have directly or indirectly funded several private, PBS, History Channel or National Geographic specials to find WW2 aircraft all over the world. PDK also got a lot of good press by associations with "Angel Flights", "Flying Doctors" and "Doctors without Borders".

Great advice guys. From what I had heard your degree doesn't matter so much, especially when going the military route, looks like 4 year BS is really all you need. I guess the aviation part just helps me get to be more familiar! And shit, I'll get to fly bush planes over Alaska in college lol

Get a business degree. I started out school with a similar major, switched to business since thats more useful, especially if you cant fly for any reason. I ended up not going the piloting path, but still in the aviation business.

I have friends who got a degree like yours and had to almost start over when they switched career paths, or decided to go into dispatch or something like that. They regretted getting a flying specific degree.

Small airshow here last weekend. GF and I were driving around and saw two of the planes chasing each other over town (the Japanese replica and one of the others, idk which) so we headed back home, my girlfriend grabbed her camera and we drove 5 min to the airport to check it out.

This pic is of Jimmy Stewart's (old actor) personal airplane. He was a native of the town I'm living in right now and the airport this show was at is named after him. There is a group that is working on restoring it to what it was like when he owned it then putting it on display. Pretty cool.
