SkyWest flight provided some entertainment for us last night. Not sure what the issue was.

We had a few of those based out of our airfield up here for a couple months. They had wheels added below the floats to land on runways and it was the most awkward looking contraption. The first time I saw one land it really looked like a smaller plane carrying a larger one on its back, space shuttle style.

Awesome Justin! I'm excited I found this thread. My dad started flying when he was 15 and now flies a Citation Mustang. He is on Beechtalk all the time and just test flew the Citation M2 so we'll see if he upgrades in the future. So much fun! I look forward to getting my pilot license in the future.

they do look awkward...kinda like clown shoes for planes.

That Fireboss is equipped with amphib floats. The main landing gear retracts up into the float and the nose tires are exposed when retracted. You can see the nose wheels in this photo.

I didn't realize the gear retracted into the float, pretty cool setup.

No worries, float flying is a different breed and if you're not familiar with it much of it seems strange. Especially when you brief "Wheels will be up for water landing...."

I'm planning to get my float rating before I leave Alaska, always something I wanted to do.

    .
I didn't realize how expensive floats for a small plane were.

Had a little accident (my buddy flying his 182) with a sunken tree limb a long time ago on a lake in Maine.

Add some waves and wind and it gets exponentially more difficult in a small plane on floats.

I've always been fascinated by the number of pilots in AK. More surprised to see ac landing on roadways-that was a bit of a shock but very cool.

Also, I noticed the Orbis aircraft over at Moffett is gone. Are they coming back?

Such a big place....having a plane there is like having a second car down here. You need one to get around.

Yep. It's always fun driving hours on poor roads to get somewhere I've previously flown to or over in less than half the time. Not.

Generally good scenery either way....air travel is so much nicer up there though :plane:
