The only thing that annoys me about fighters going over is that they don't notify me so I can go watch.

Sold my services to the USAF these days. Still not boring but I miss seeing carrier breaks.

The USAF is cool, though. They don't take losers, and are happy to take reformed squids!

Sometimes there are fighters that stop by Moffett Field (I think normally I've only seen F-18s; there was another I saw recently that I wasn't sure what it was. It looked like a single engine, single tail, delta-wing but it didn't look like an F-16). One day about 2 months ago there was an F-18 that appeared to be doing touch and go's - that was awesome to watch. I love the sound of those jets.

Otherwise it's just C-130s and HH-60s that fly around Moffett. No other jets sadly. Should call ATC and thank them for flying here!

...^^^... FWIW ... If I was going to be a "lifer" ... I would go USAF in a heartbeat. :)

IMO ... "Pilot shelf-life" is longer in the USAF ... with better facilities too.

USMC was a great place to grow up fast ... but your shelf-life and longevity seemed shorter.

Yep. Our pilots keep flying well into staff and even flag ranks. At one of my deployment locations, the wing commander was a Brigadier General, and he still pulled two U2 missions a month. LOTS of respect for a leader who keeps himself in the rotation even though he didn't have to.

Of course, it also doesn't hurt that flying the U2 qualifies one as an astronaut, and there are not very many qualified U2 pilots. A brotha gotta maintain that flight pay!
