I was down at COTA the first 2 years of the USGP and the chase helicopter filming looked like it would be big time fun to fly. It is pretty funny watching a car run away from a helicopter as they are both accelerating in the same direction too.

Yea no joke! I would love that job but that's a niche job for sure. They use the same pilot and aircraft for every race.

As impartial as I can be, I can't help but agree. It's very nice inside and out and it's a lot of fun to fly. It's a weird transition from flying American (counter clockwise rotating) to European (clockwise rotating) helicopters because I mostly fly Robby's. Before cranking up I do a couple practice Vuichard recoveries just to remind myself it's all opposite lol

Had to look that up, never heard a vortex ring recovery called that specifically but it sounds like the fairly standard method.

The old method is to reduce collective and push with the cyclic into clean air. the Vuichard recovery technique is relatively new and works much better than the traditional method, especially at lower altitudes.

Here's an excellent video that gives an great visualisation of the recovery and the vortex ring state.

It’s one of the methods we teach and practice, I’ve just never heard it called a Vuichard recovery.

Nothing like actually doing that manuver and only losing 20 to 30 feet. I always liked doing that.

    See below

Had some fuel delivery issues in the air near Lake Havasu. Left tank in the 206 running for about 10 minutes and my fuel flow starting going ape shit rapidly moving from 6-25 GPH - JPI in the panel was indicating the same thing. EGT was climbing and the engine was starting to sputter. Mixture full, low speed pump on - no change. High speed pump on engine bogged down even more. Threw the tank over to the right and everything smoothed out on fuel flow and the engine returned to normal operation.

Freaked me out pretty good. Landed at Havasu and had a local A&P check it out. Figures vapor lock in the left header tank and a bubble. Did a few engine runs, took on full fuel and flew home without any issues. Not a relaxing flight

But crossed over 380 hours :D

Geez, sounds like that bubble was scary! Man you're just walking away from me in hours...I can't wait to get back in the air. I'm doing an IPC when I get home with a CFII friend

Trying to hit 400 by December - think I can do it. I'll be at FTW next week thursday/friday and then back home for about another 6.5-7. Then I just need to find excuses til the end of the year to fly
