Those bastards are loud when they're not trying. When they try, they are devastating.

During PHOENIX SCORPION in 1997, the B-1s got their first real operational deployment. Saddam had kicked Hans Blix and the rest of he UN inspectors out of Iraq, and we decided to help him "reconsider that decision." The B-1s caused millions in damage to Saddam's palaces without dropping a single bomb, and he realized that it was safer to let the inspectors back in.

How did the bones do this? Low altitude supersonic flight.

Our satellite intel is second to none, and we knew where Saddam was every night. Night one, two bones, escorted by four eagles and two tankers, would fly up to the southern edge of the no-fly zone. After topping off, the eagles would run a high-altitude cap and the bones would make their run at low altitude, dropping really low - 500 feet, and push it just over the sound barrier right over the palace. BOOM! No more windows. The next night he'd go to another palace, and then the bones would break those windows.

After less than a week, Saddam must have considered that UN inspectors were cheaper alternative to Pella replacement glass.

Such a fun deployment (I was comm for the tanker task force).

I've never looked at low altitude B-1s the same. Cover your ears.

For the younger crowd. F-4s to me are the sound of freedom.

    I miss them.

I've given it some serious thought & may still persue it...

I'll stay in my current qcareer field but, wouldn't mind getting paid for doing more stuff I enjoy.

I actually enjoyed instructing. Not all of it, that's for sure. There were students I really enjoyed flying with, and some that tried to kill me on a regular basis. Overall I think I learned more than most of my students and it made me into a much more proficient pilot. I even got one of those silly Gold Seals on my certificate that says I didn't totally suck at it.

If you find the time and money, I say go for it.

Four A-10s in formation sound almost the same as a C-5. Freaky.

    So do Citations.

Basically, I fly fighter jets. But they're more like peace-time fighter jets because they don't have any weapons.
