Unfortunately that's true. Can't wait for my son to get out of the Marines. They kill more of their own training than they do in combat.

He's slowly coming around though. Now he's planning to get out after deployment, get an aviation degree, and go into the Air Force. He's thinking of Embry Riddle since they are a yellow ribbon school, but I'm trying to get him to go to Henderson State in Arkansas so he will be closer.

There are a ton of aircrew and aircraft maintenance officers with degrees from Embry Riddle. The USAF also likes its pilots to have other skills, since they are often "banked" into non-flying staff jobs between flying assignments. Whatever he does, it needs to be a science degree. Zoomies have no use for liberal arts.

If he doesn’t like college (I don’t blame him, complete waste of time and money pretty much) he can fly for the Army without a degree.

I considered Henderson State for a little while. Ended up at the U of A instead though.

...^^^... IIRC ... In the RVN days ... a Army Warrant Officer Helicopter pilot had to be 18 y/o and have a HS education. I knew some very young Army helicopter pilots.

That is why they were so fearless and good CAS guys.

Yeah. UofA would be great, but I don't think he wants to live that close to home. Do they have aviation degrees? I know Henderson has a nice program, or at least they did when I was there many years ago.

No aviation programs at Fayetteville. I wish there was one, but I heard that the state wouldn't allow it because it would compete with Henderson...Not sure the accuracy of that though. I liked it here anyway and I graduate on Saturday :woot:

Congratulations! Fayetteville is a lot nicer place to spend your college years than Arkadelphia. Not much to do there, but I did meet my wife there, so it wasn't all bad.
My son will be using the GI Bill for flight training and a degree, so I think he pretty much has to do it at a 4yr aviation program.

He has to get a aviation degree? Or can he not split it up between a flight school and a university?

Since he is using the GI Bill, and needing both flight school and a 4yr degree, the only way to get it fully paid for is a part 141 program associated with a degree. We think.
