Thanks! Wasn’t by choice. I was forced to upgrade. It was upgrade or quit. It’s nice being capt except for losing the seniority I had. I was 9 of 128 as an FO in DCA. Now on the capt side I’m 90 out of 130.

Airborne bus is better than a Greyhound bus, make a little more money too!

Still just being a bus driver though. Put your love of flying into a career that you actually get to fly in.

Anything above a couple hundred feet is boring flight, just sitting there and moving a control once in a while isn’t a rewarding or enjoyable experience.

I fly Apaches in the Army. I have a few hundred hours in fixed wing as well and while it is far better than sitting at a desk it just gets boring fast for me.

Nice. Everyone can't fly Apaches. It would take too long to get coast to coast. ;)
    Thank you for your service.

Not to mention the fuel cost per passenger mile. And maintenance, you’d need at least five or six to start the trip in order for one to finish it.

About how many hours a year do you fly? It’s been my observation while researching the Air Force that the more fun the equipment is, the less time you spend actually flying it.

That is pretty accurate. Minimum requirements are only 140 hours a year and that’s all some guys will manage to get between maintenance problems and the rest of the Army BS that takes up your day. I’d say anyone getting close to 180 hours is having a much better than average year. Deployed pilots will fly a lot more hours, usually between 400-800 hours in 9-12 months. The Army cares more about if you have a current PT test score or sexual harassment class in the books than they do about your proficiency as a pilot.

The amount of time spent at work dealing with helicopters varies greatly by duty position as well. I spend most of my day down on the hangar floor, flying or running up helicopters and other guys spend all day (except when they fly) in an office.

I don't think anyone would argue against the idea that flying an attack helicopter with guns and missiles is more fun than an airliner!!

But, I would say that I genuinely enjoy my job and I love going to work. I fly about 750 hours a year and I always look forward to my next trip. Do I wish the 737 could hover and fly up valleys, yes I do. But I will make do.
