I think it’s essentially mud flaps to protect the underside of the airplane but I’m not positive if that’s it. I’m not sure who’s going to take a multi-million dollar jet off pavement though.....aside from drug runners

Maybe it is the Alaska special with all their mild gravel airports. Long, smooth, but gravel.

Cool stuff. First informed post explains the bleed air spin-up system and says you will never see a jet off pavement. Then four people hop on and say, "I've done that" or "I know so and so who has done that." That's an interesting method to spin up the nosewheel though. Thanks for sharing.

And If I remember right on this sizable investigation it was blamed on Pilot Fatigue.... Maddog Mattis was on that plane as well I think

It was an empty ferry flight as I recall. But Mattis was the at the base at the time so he had some soundbites on it.

TAMPA — The behemoth C-17 cargo plane that landed in error at a tiny Davis Islands airport carried within its fuselage one of the military's mightiest men.

But Gen. James Mattis, head of U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base, holds no ill will toward the crew that screeched to a halt on a short runway with him aboard.

"The young pilot did a good job landing, albeit on the wrong strip," Mattis said Wednesday.

Six months after the mishap shook up a residential district that flanks the Peter O. Knight Airport near downtown Tampa, the military has finally put the blame on human error, a theory espoused by civilians long ago.
The Air Force C-17 sits at Peter O. Knight Airport after missing MacDill by about 4 miles on July 20. Gen. James Mattis was aboard.

I just got an unclose look at a PC-24 a couple of weeks ago. The only mod I noticed was a gravel deflector on the nose wheel. However the pilot mentioned all of the tires were designed for very low psi for a jet. It was an impressive airplane for sure...especially that cargo door!

Biz jets on grass and gravel seems like such a novel thing to me. Only reason I can think of is in a place like Africa or Australia where an ETOPS contingency isn't out of the realm of possibility. But damn if it doesnt look fun.

Looks awesome, but good luck getting insurance coverage for off-pavement ops in a jet. I’m also curious how they protect the flaps from fod

I imagine it would go something like:

"Hi, Jake from State Farm, I'd like to cover my biz jet and oh btw, I land on improved strips sometimes"

    "Uh...wut?"

Unfortunately, from the flight school - only a 140. I'm 5'10''-230 - so I need a mouse CFI...haha. I'm going to try to sucker someone into use of their Cub...but most on the field are gorgeous...and I wouldn't want to 'learn' on one of those...

Anyone know anything about Sault Ste Marie? might be a new destination...
