It was but he said it’s one he doesn’t wear much. I remember back on my day that they cut across my shoulders then ripped the back off. He got to take his off and they cut a square out....bunch of sissies. On a side note, he’s in the running for a flight training scholarship thru AFROTC for $3600. And, he’s signing contract to take his commission in the hopes of a coveted pilot slot.

My flight school just drenched us with buckets of water when we got out of the plane. It was in Thunder Bay Ontario, and my first solo was in November. I was standing on a sheet of ice by the time the last drop of water hit the ground.

Congrats to your son on this achievement, and best of luck with the scholarship.

Awesome. Good luck with the scholarship and even more so with getting the pilot slot. That was the only reason I didn’t do AFROTC, because they can’t guarantee you a flight training slot. I didn’t want to endure 4 years of ROTC to get thrown behind a desk in active duty.

It wasn’t until my junior year that they started allowing ROTC cadets to commission into the reserves. That may have swayed my decision had it been an option for me.

I never got my shirt cut out for my solo:(! Matter of fact I soloed because it was 90* at 7am on an August morning and the 150 wouldnt leave the ground with my instructor in it, so we aborted the takeoff, he told me if I make it halfway down the runway again and it's still on the ground, abort and taxi back, he got out and shut the door and walked away LOL!! I was praying it wouldnt lift off then it did hahaha!

Go for it! Even though my regular job is in the flight levels these days, I still am an active instructor - but only to give tailwheel instruction. Feel free to ask any questions, I'd be glad to help. A Cub or SuperCub is the best thing going for a tailwheel trainer. A Citabria also checks the box, but the forward visibility is kind of cheating.

How tough is it to transition from a tricycle gear plane to a tail dragger? Have thought doing something crazy, like building a RV-8.

Tailwheel training itself is usually about 5-10 hours of dual, and 95% is about takeoffs and landings. My students usually have made 50 to 100 takeoffs and landings while earning their endorsement. You'll wake up your feet to use the rudder the entire time the engine is running.

Transitioning to one of the RV series would only take a couple hours after earning the tailwheel endorsement. The RV series is a great airplane, hence their popularity. If your experience is only in light trainers (PA28s & Cessnas) then you'll notice that they have push/pull rods instead of cables as well as a different airfoil that results in less stability and more maneuverability than what you're used to.

Thanks for the feedback. My only fixed wing time has been in a T-34C, with the rest in rotary wing aircraft. Needless to say the latter has made me "one with the rudder pedals," so I keeping my feet on the pedals at all times won't be an issue.

Not sure if I could fit in a RV-4, thus I'm thinking about the RV-8. I'll take a trip to their factory before buying anything.
