That looks like a C-17. Why's he at PHX and not Luke AFB? Is there a guard unit on Sky Harbor too?

I know the Copperheads are based at PHX...but that's all I know. I should likely have googled before replying, but I'm not that far along in my coffee...

We have the Air Guard here at PHX with the KC-135’s and Cutter has the military contract so they occasionally get C-17’s/F-18’s/C-130’s etc. This particular 17 actually came in with the Air Force bball team

I used to work in airport snow removal operations and that light fluffy snow SUCKS to remove unless you have a broom truck. Plowing it just causes it to blow right back onto the surface behind you.

Fairchild AFB (Spokane) had these giant Cadillac plows back in the 90s that would gather it up into a dump bed, then they'd drive over to the parade ground and dump it. Kept the runways and ramps clear, and left a gigantic snow pile that would last well into May.

That sounds weird! Seems like piling it up and hitting it with a blower would be a better route.

When I was working at MDW they would have loaders putting the snow in dump trucks and they would drive it to a remote pad and a snow blower would launch it into a pile. It would end up a few stories high, kinda cool to watch.

That area up there gets either no snow, or all of it. Wet snow moves great, but the ramp there is HUGE (because tankers take up a lot of real estate) and the grass strips between the taxiway and runway can't accommodate all of the snow that can accumulate during the winter. They were talking about putting in a heating system on the ramp - that might have been done by now.

Then there's the matter of the ducks in the spring and the fall. Suicidal ducks have some weird tanker fetish.

I finally decided to go with Sportys for my ground school, I started the first lessons tonight and I’m curious to see how long it will take to complete.
Weather sucks where I’m at (just outside of Louisville) so I haven’t been to any local airports but my supervisor just told me today that after we finish this job (likely the end of the month) I may be going to L.A. area, if we work a similar schedule (6 10’s) or a regular 5 day week at that job I’ll probably try to get a few hours with a CFI while I’m out in Cali.

Everyone has a "back in my day, flying cost ____" story. One of the guys that used to rent from the school told me a story of how his father used to rent a Cub for $6 an hour and one day the price went to $7 an hour. His father was livid and went on forever on how owning a Cub was cheaper than renting it at $7 an hour.

If anyone wants a Bose A20 headset (with Bluetooth, dual plug) with only 30 hours in them let me know.

Buddy is selling me his Zulus I’ve been using and I don’t need two expensive headsets.

Also offloading the Gen 5 iPad mini I got when I started flying last August. Haven’t used it once ha thought I would.

I’d do about 950 ish for the headset and 475 ish for the iPad mini. We can work out PayPal or shipping or whatever questions you have if you want to reply here or PM me. Thanks!

That’s crazy! To be fair an almost 17% increase seems like a pretty big jump.
I’d like to get some seat time in a cub one day, the club I might join for my time in Cali has a carbon cub on the fleet list and it would be interesting to see what the rental+CFI cost would be to get a few hours in it.

On a side note, @BuzzardsGottaEat talking about his iPad brought up an interesting question for me, is it worth getting an iPad and foreflight as a student? The subscription cost isn’t bad and it seems like it’s quickly becoming the future.
I’m in the middle of this webinar now trying to learn more info.

Most of my classmates used it on every flight. A few of us never have and are in no hurry to. It’s purely preference but there are a lot of upsides to having it.

Yes. Learn ForeFlight day 1. For a GA pilot who flies in a different plane each flight, it’s invaluable. I have 10 different planes in mine with all their cruise speeds and W/B profiles. I constantly chair fly many routes on the iPad without ever leaving the house. Weather, charts, regs, and more at your fingertips.

My CFI still made me show proficiency on paper, but quickly moved to ForeFlight for real world flying.

That's what I was leaning towards, I don't know who my CFI will be but my assumption was it would be better to train on foreflight with the CFI and learn the paper for backup vs learn paper and then try to transition to foreflight potentially without a CFI in the plane to help learn it.

Why size Ipad do you think is good for C172 size cockpit? And what type of mount do you prefer?
I noticed in a Flight Chops video he was using what looked to be the big ipad pro in a 182 and had a mount near the front of the door frame that put it out of the way but in a good spot to reference.

I liked the mini we had in our 172s/150/Citabria/glider/etc. All those smaller planes you end up covering everything up with a larger iPad ha. I’ve only been flying less than a year though so some more seasoned pilots may chime in with more experience. We use the RAM Claw Yoke Mount.

Several of the 172s and 182s have some type of gps, either with or without a screen, so I just leave my iPad mini in my lap. One of the 172s has an iPad mini in the panel. The 152s and Cubs I fly are pretty basic. I’ve just gotten used to having the iPad in my lap and don’t mount it.
