Reminds of what my instructor used to say about emergencies at night when we were flying around Prescott and it was dark as hell, "when you think you're getting close to the ground turn on your landing light. If you like what you see leave it on. If you don't turn it off...."

Reminds me of a story my dad told me from his HH-3 days in the Phillipines:

Doing night time air refueling practice off a C-130 in a valley with higher elevation peaks on both sides, gas up successfully, separate and turn to fly to another practice area.

C-130 very shortly after takes a massive hit from a mid-air collision with ???, no other aircraft are visually identified, base radar cant see anything, helos get called back to the area for SAR, do a bunch of patterns in the valley, no joy and RTB. Inspection finds sheet metal damage and all the paint just below the nose of the C-130 is scraped off.

Next morning, SAR resumes for unknown aircraft in the area of the hit. No joy again. As they go to climb out of the valley and RTB again, crew chief catches a glimpse of something out of his eye.

The locals had run a bunch of thick steel cables off the peaks for illegal logging operations  The herc had hit one of the cables *just* low enough that it bent around the nose and only took the paint with it.

Oh hey! That's in my neck of the woods! I train out of AUG but fly thru PWM and SFM often. Love working with portland ATC, they're so nice and helpful. They let me romp around the city at night a while back when the airspace was dead quiet. Then cleared me for unrestricted climb in the Sundowner :D

    Fly safe, see ya around:cheers:

Yeah Portland atc is super chill and easy to deal with (aside from the woman on tower freq that eats her mic on occasion that I have to constantly ask to say again)
I actually flew down to Sanford yesterday to grab a Montreal chart. Im heading up to Augusta and Bangor next week.

Nice, I love swinging by Pilots Cove. Bgr is just as awesome, especially watching all the military birds coming through. I fly outta there a bunch too, in the club's 152. Makes me feel like a mosquito on that 11000'x200' runway haha.

    I think your right.

    Couple more Edwards AFB.

Would be so cool to walk around... or even fly over.

I was liking the looks of that top right plane...tiny jet 4 engines and tanks on the wings.

Saab Drakkens. The C-130 looks like they’ve already started parting it out to fix the remaining E-models in the ANG fleet.
