Went to HS in Harlingen, TX back when that was the CAF HQ. Was also getting my Private then, so I was in the pattern and the practice area with the coolest and most rare birds in the world! I also got free admission to every airshow and never missed a one. I was one lucky SOB to be there and see them everyday. Will always appreciate that!

Had great conversations with the aircrews too since they wanted to hear of my dad's exploits in B-18s, B-24s & B-17s in actual combat.

That's a HUGE bummer. That was one of my favorite museums I've been to world wide.

The only recent addition was the Bearcat. The P-51s, Spitfire, and Super Corsair have been here for awhile. It wouldn't surprise me though if he bought more and is storing them somewhere else. His hangers are pretty dang full.

Hmm maybe not then, Paul Allen's collection never had a Bearcat but the Historic Flight Foundation across the runway did. They moved out of Everett to Spokane, WA a couple years ago though.

It is fun to watch him get something out of the back of the hanger. He has to pull so much stuff out that he runs out of tarmac space to park them. He keeps the Caravan on floats in the very back and only gets it out a few holiday weekends a year when he flies the fam to one of the lake houses. Warbirds, helos, and jets everywhere. He is building a third hanger, so maybe his life will get easier soon.

The really cool thing if Steuart brings them to KVBT, they will be readily accessible to the public. His warbirds are always out for people to see at the FBO and flying over town. Steuart wants people excited about flying and promotes it heavily. The FBO caters to visitors and allows them within several feet of the tarmac.

I don’t know how many times I’ve been in the pattern with one of the P-51s or Corsair. Kinda sucks when a 3 ship of P-51s are waiting for you to get the Super Cub out of the way.

This is all that separates you from his planes

That's pretty much how they were setup at FHCAM, oil drip pans and all, lol. I'm glad to see the collection is going to a true enthusiast who is keeping everything together and will fly and appreciate them. I was worried that a collection like that wouldn't find someone to buy the whole lot and they were destined to get split up and a lot of them hidden in the back of someones private hangar and neglected or forgotten about.

Steuart flies them all regularly and does several meet and great type shows a year. One or two are always displayed for the public and he rotates them every week or so. The FBO has a great restaurant that attracts a crowd every day. It was designed with public access a priority.

Just got through flying and am getting tacos. My view off the restaurant balcony.

I did ask around, but mums the word on if any of the warbirds are coming here. The new hanger is being built for a pair of Falcons, including the 8X in this video.

I still think the sharpest looking jet they ever did was the 20/200 model. I recall reading that the 20 was the only bizjet to be flown over Mach 1. I was told by several Falcon pilots that there are photos on the walls at Falcon Jet in NJ of a 20 being flown with afterburning engines.

Had a classmate in a C-150 take the runway at an uncontrolled field - right in to the path of a landing P-51 (from the CAF). They collided. He lived but he really messed up his back. Iirc, it was 1972-73 timeframe.
I should go look at the NTSB website to confirm...

Hate to keep dumping pics, but I flew again this morning and they changed out the display from yesterday. This was in the FBO today:

This is our club charter plane, which they’ve yet to let me fly

And just another cool plane at the FBO. At first I thought it was Steuart’s but his was parked across the runway.

And lastly my view from the cockpit

Nice pics...keep dumping! We had a local gentleman who opened up his own museum out here in Valparaiso, IN about 20 years ago. He had a pristine-condition collection and flew them all regularly. He had a P-51 "Excaliber", F4U, T-6, T-28, T-34 (which he left me fly) Stearman, A-37, L-5, an RV4, and probably a half dozen others that I can't recall. He would give rides in all of them for a fuel donation. His name was Jim Read and he sadly passed away several weeks ago. He was a retired USMC fighter pilot during the Korean War, and was a really fun guy to talk to. He will be missed. I think the Corsair was purchased by a group of guys from Michigan, and the Mustang briefly left the country for the Czech Republic, but is back home in the USA last time I searched the N number. Not sure about the others.

Found this one, assuming it's a legit photo then that is pretty damn cool. Reading some comments about it on Reddit, it sounds like only the one engine had afterburner as they were using it to test the engine.

I think he had one of those planes out yesterday, you can tell from the sound. I've gotten so used to it I didn't even look up. Or it could have been someone from the OZ1 flying club, I'm not far from their runway. Still need to make it out to the restaurant and check out the planes.
