It still happens on occasion but it’s a riskier setup so unlikely to happen at a packed show. The last airshow I was at in New Orleans Duda demonstration with a simulated bombing run from an F/A-18 Hornet with pyro and than a Marine Skid formation dropped off Marines in a “contested landing” with the Cobras firing overhead. The pyro FODed the runway and they had to cancel the next act so the Blue Angels could perform on time.

That is quite the run in a Skyhawk! I used to fuel up 172s, 182s, and 208s coming out of Wichita being delivered to Russia, China, and Africa. Watching a 172 squat down with full ferry tanks was interesting, along with the extremely shallow climb out. Fun times.

I’m surprised you went into EWR and not TEB, however good luck getting out. The NYC airspace is just insane.

That was a weird one. The airspace isn’t really a big deal as long as you don’t miss a call and do as you’re told  this week I’ve been to TEB every day so far!

I've known some DC-9 pilots (back in the day) who would NOT go into JFK without a working autopilot - because of the workload due to congestion.
Up until then I had never thought I'd see an ATP fret over an inop A/P enough to RTB to ATL.

Blast from the past! Found a pic from when they let a few of us wanna be future fighter pilots wander around Columbus AFB for a week. Sadly, there wasn't a way to get a joyride in one.

    Nice!

I went through all the ranks for CAP back in '74-'75. Got my Pvt SEL ticket through them. I was in a military academy already, so we were not required to wear CAP uniforms. BUT --- the academy allowed us to wear our CAP ribbons, including solo wings and pilot wings, (but not rank) on our USMC cadet uniforms. That was cool!

    Edit. found a photo

Was taking the trash out to the curb this morning and a Starship flew over the house about 800AGL. I’ve seen them on the tarmac before, but it was really cool to see it overhead.

Riding in the back of these things is definitely nicer experience than riding in the front.

We broke down in the vineyard evening of day 6. A latitude landed as we were walking into the FBO like a chariot sent from heaven!
