...^^^... The end of that runway are the burbs of ATL and then the city after that ... it would not have been a good place to go down.

Understood. I'd rather take my chances going straight ahead and landing slow with control, even if it's onto a roof top. Statistically a better plan. Sadly it's called the impossible turn for a reason.

I don't want to speculate on this incident but the vast majority of aircraft get slow, stall, spin, and hit the ground going vertical.

Got to tour Cannon AFB today, we flew from Phoenix there and back on an MC-130J. We got to tour their ospreys, AC-130Js, MQ-9s, and we got a drop in from some USMC F-35Bs from NAS Miramar. It was a great day!

Just curious .... Is anyone going to the HAI HELICOPTER EXPO in Atlanta next week ? ..... March 6-9, 2023.

I am going to try to go if I get back in town. I used to get in free, but now have to pay for the expensive tickets.

Years ago (late 70's-early 80's) a geologist buddy of mine would go to one in Vegas with some BC/Yukon bush pilots. Apparently one of the Yukon pilots looped a 500D there one year and set the Hughes reps into a tizzy. I didn't see it, but having flown with the guy who reportedly did it, I wouldn't be surprised.

I've seen the Sikorsky footage of a CH-53A doing a loop. If that monster can do it...
But then the A/D models performed like sportscars compared to all of the other rotorcraft. Yanked & banked like A-4 Skyhawks (just to put them in the proper time frame).

Search the web for that footage.

I can believe it, especially from those bush pilots. The 500D is a hot little machine.

Mid eighties there was a massive gold exploration boom in NW BC just inboard of the Alaska pan handle. One helicopter contractor dominated the area with over a dozen 500D's flying crews and drill moves. They had several very good Canadian bush pilots and a level above were a handful of Kiwi pilots who flew deer hunts back home. Then there was one Japanese/Canadian on a completely other level, the engineers hated him and with today's nanny state recordings of torque hits, I'm sure he wouldn't be allowed to fly.

These days no one wants to do a crew or drill move with anything smaller than an A-Star, then I show up with tales of moving drills with a 47. LOL

Great job finding and posting the video! Cheers for that.

The aircraft truly blew my mind with it's ability! And I ALWAYS made it home in it. Lost the #1 engine in the mountains once, in an "A" model, and we had to fly under the power lines, but we got home. The "D" was stronger.
I crewed both "A" and "D" models and both were tremendously capable.

The OH6A and the 500E/D's were sports cars, Pilots and me love yanking them around. I did a slow climb with a CBP pilot up a steep V on west of Baboquivari peak, Once on top it's 2000 feet straight down! Loved it

Anybody here use Priority Pass lounges at airports? Do you know if you can get into the lounge with a standby listing or must you have a confirmed seat?

I've never flown standby, but if you have status that gives you access, I don't see why you couldn't. If access is tied to the class of your seat, probably not. I haven't traveled extensively for work in several years, so not sure what might have changed, but security never seemed super tight at the lounges.

They ask for a boarding pass, not sure how they would react to a standby ticket, likely turn you away since lounges are so overcrowded these days. But never know if you don't try.

Last few TDY flights 10 plus people on standby. Flights are so oversold now with fuel costs.
