Thank you for sharing this. I'd forgotten about that goofy nose cone mounted pitot tube.

All about the money ... the new air refueler (now the KC-46) became the priority for Air Mobility Command.

I was at the headquarters standing up the newly formed Tanker Airlift Control Center (TACC) when they came on line. I actually did the data entry to add the new tails to the SORTS (Status of Resources and Training System) database. My first exposure IRL was in 1994 on the ramp at RAF Mildenhall.
... that nimbleness proved fatal for a crew up here in July 2010. They overflew the laws of aerodynamic lift. :(

Watched that from the ramp at then Pope AFB in 1984 ... boy that was a pretty paint scheme on the original ones ... blue, white, and grey.

Love it. Not sure if my dad has any time logged in "Ol Shakey" but does have a lot of time in C-97s. The one at Fox field is in his log books.

Here's some C-17 pics from Death Valley.

There's a KC-97 Tanker that's part of a restaurant at the Colorado Springs airport.

The one at Fox Field is outfitted as a KC-97 but California Air Guard never operated KC versions.

My grandfather flew them too. Almost 17,000 hours in them, and 4,000 in C-47s before that. He loved those birds.

As I recall, Dad was an IP in Goons with about 12,000 hrs, and had about 4,000 in the 124 - had great stories about both of them, for sure!

Love those old AF DC-10s. The color schemes were awesome.

My dad flew the venerable “ole shakey” out of Charleston from 1960-1965. Really heard some good stories of his flights the past couple of years. He just turned 85 and is telling more and more. BTW, he’s a Tacoma guy too, 2018 AC.
On a side note, spent 15 1/2 hours with my son last week driving to Randolph AFB from Atlanta to start his drone training. Don’t really understand the worm of a mustache for these young 2nd Lt’s(j

They can also kick on the reversers in flight and drop that thing right out of the sky if they want!

Huh, thanks. Cool info. I may be mistaken again but I believe a 6,000' FPM descent can meet the definition of a steep approach.

There's a lot of aerodynamics going on here: CG, elevator authority, stability, and more of course that I'm clueless to. Yeesh, I sure hope all four RTs engage evenly and have equal thrust.

And, who went first and threw them power levers over that gate?

Just browsing the thread and found this. Very cool design, what caught my attention was the Starfighter. My remote in Balikesir, Turkey the TAF we worked with were flying them ... I'll never forget kneeling in front of that main landing gear, engines running, trying to stay focused on task, whilst praying the pilot didn't slip off the brakes. Hadn't thought of that for a very long time. :)
