Maj. Shul did alot to promote the SR-71, and his comeback story is truly impressive! His RSO Col. Watson Jr. also had an a few hurdles before joining the program. Truly a fantastic team!

About the loss of one of the hangars at LTA/MCAS Tustin...sketchy to say the least. The county can't tear them down because of their historical status even though the county has wanted them gone since BRAC closed the air station. So sad. It was a great place when in operation.

Here's some other aviation history which is much more fun to learn about.

I was just watching a clip about living in Mojave and then went to see the google images of the airport. C133s and interesting neighbors.

Very sad to see. I cut my teeth learning to repair helicopters in those hangars. Changed squadrons while I was there so I worked in both hangars at one point or another. The one that burned was my last & best (HMH-361).

See my earlier post (#11144) about the "fireproof treated wood" that had to be buried because they couldn't get rid of it by burning it. Have to wonder why it did burn now. The treatment is too old I guess.

I'd sure suspect the City Council of arson since they want to get rid of these two beauties. If they did it, I hope they are found out!

At least the other hanger is still there. Those were some incredible structures. I'm wondering now what the cause of the fire was...

I very HIGHLY suspect arson instigated by the city council. They want that land. That structure was treated with fire retardant, it wouldn't ignite spontaneously. (But I have to acknowledge the age of said retardant.)

Given the problems in Cali. I wonder about the problems with homeless braking in and starting a fire. I suspect that might also be the cause of the fire that took out the I-10 freeway.

At least they weren't storing tens of thousands of bales of straw in there that spontaneously went up.

Right. Did you catch this line from that article:

"Treated with fire retardant, the lumber should not have burned easily.
It takes a tremendous fuel load beneath,”

The MCAS (H) Tustin Hangar was treated also. What was the fuel used to get it going???

On a lucky day you can get a mini version of that show here. Years ago I had just gotten off the lift at the highest point at Stevens Pass when I heard a rumbling. A few seconds later here comes a pair of Prowlers up the valley on their wingtips. They had to be at least a hundred feet below me because I was definitely looking down at them.
