The reason "why" is because being a pilot in the USAF is not "fun" anymore. Peruse these pages and see the old warbirds with hot ladies posing on/next to them. That would NEVER (repeat) happen in today's Air Force. Why? Political Correctness run-amok. They have removed ALL the hot women from the aircraft as a course of social experimentation. If I had a son/daughter interested in a flying career, I would advise them NOT to seek out one in the USAF.

Very much so! The skills, technological training, and education are the best. I spent 30 years in the USAF so I have a little knowledge on the matter. If you want to get a good career, and knock out a college degree without paying for it----that's the way to go. As far as staying in for 20-30 years you REALLY have to decide just how much PC, pussy management, jackassery a human can take.

    KC-135 crew chief here.

When the Navy or Marines is refueled, we attach a drogue to the boom and they fly their probe into the basket. F-18 off the coast of California-

The Air Force has ARR(air refueling receptacle) and we stick our pole in the hole. A NATO E-3 AWAC over Europe-

Gassing a F-16 chase plane as the KC-46 was testing the boom-

And because the OP threw up a photo of where the Sierras meet the Owens Valley, I'll throw one up too-

Truth. The skills and degrees I got in the Air Force over my 22 years made getting jobs a breeze. Skills developed during awards boards made job interviews tame by comparison. I love working for the VA now because it has that same "what can WE do to get the job done?" attitude my active duty time had.

My 5 years at Fairchild and their KC-135s made me hate the term "organic airlift." I was in the mobile initial comm kit ADVON team, and those things are a damn uncomfortable ride for 14 hours over the Arctic. 6 hours from alert to wheels up? WTF? I much preferred th 3 day wait for C-5s. Also got tired of the CONSTANT graffiti "NKAWTG." We get it, you're a flying Texaco, now shut up. ;)

Cold as shit too when there's four complete pallets (shaped for 135s) - the heaters are in the ceiling and warm air doesn't get to the sides. I always crawled on top of my pallet and nestled in between the antenna masts and some radio cases. I could wedge in and not flop around in turbulence. We joked that the only reason we were even issued parkas was those flights - definitely didn't need them in the desert. Other guys would try to sleep on the baggage pallet, but that was always a competition (20-30 pax and not a lot of place to lay out). And then there would be the occasional dickhead boom who would bake fucking Pillsbury cimmanon rolls for the crew and smell up the bird while the pax all had box nasties...you all know who you are.

God help us all if someone had some intestinal distress. That lingered.

    God, I miss those days!

Haha... when I fly on the jet I'm aircrew, so I'm in one of the 5 bunks in the back in my 20 degree sleeping bag watching a movie between going up front and making pizzas in the oven. Sucks to suck!

Recently had a Major we picked up on a pax haul ask one of the crew chiefs to get out of the bunk so he could sleep in it. Sorry dude, we're enlisted but bunks are for aircrew. If you don't like it, go talk to the AC(aircraft commander) and he'll tell you to take your place on the red troop seat with your knees up against a pallet. Crew chiefs will be the only ones working as soon as we hit the ground after a 10.5 hour flight. ;)

So, it's not exactly what it looks like in the movies. This is a real 777 forward electronics bay. Pic is from just under the L1 door looking across to under the R1.

And the water cannon salute is what happens when the captain reaches retirement age on the same aircraft.

Oakland Athletics plane sits right outside the jet center I'm based at. The GS Warriors also use the same jet center, but they use a Delta Airbus.

That's really cool. Are you saying that's somewhere under the cockpit? I don't understand your L1 R1 mumbo jumbo

Where I'm at to take the pictures is under the floor of the main deck right inside the left entry door, known as L1. So, I'm actually several feet aft of the flight deck.

Does anyone watch the Smithsonian channel ? They have some aviation crash investigation programs that are very cool. Not very exciting but very informative.

Most of our fleet is 429 except the 777 as you accurately point out, it's 629.

It's an awesome aircraft to wrench on. I had two 777s & a Douglas today. It was unusually busy for me today...a pre-departure service check for the ETOPS, FLIR camera R&R & a starter boro on a GE90.
