I've been there a couple times, but I am based in Oakland, CA so I don't make it out to Georgia all that often. I was in Augusta last week, but I don't see myself going back to GA anytime soon.

ITs not too uncommon to see military types flying over while I'm out camping - lots of open space to play in up here. Just seemed odd to see them flying in formation over the park.

I've watched planes refuel through binoculars....got buzzed by a couple jets one time out camping, they were maybe a few hundred feet above the tree tops....drove smack into the middle of a platoon on a training mission during OIF/OEF. Came around a corner to two columns of camo'ed guys with full packs, they parted to the sides of the road and took a knee while I passed. Felt kinda bad, it was hot and I kicked up a lot of dust, made their day even a little more miserable. Apparently the climate and terrain of MT is similar to Afghanistan. almost got buzzed by a c130 dumping slurry on a fire. We didn't know the fire was as close as it was to us - just over the next ridge. Forest ranger came up a few hours later and told us to pack up, apparently the pilot noted our location and radioed in

Vipers can turn on a dime, give you 7 cents change, and kill you for your lunch money. Their only drawback is that they don't have a spare engine, turning them into lawn darts during a failure.

But they can do some crazy shit.

Tend to see a bit of military traffic over the Sierra and Yosemite too. And the commercial stuff over Yosemite headed in and out of the Bay Area is a bit of a shame when all you really want out there in the backcountry is stars and wind. And ISS spotting. My wife always spots the first satellite. Always.

Are you signed up for this? https://spotthestation.nasa.gov

Enter your info and it will sent you text alerts when the ISS is scheduled to fly over you and where to look. Doesn't work very well if you're traveling though unless you log in and reregister with a new location.

I did see, not hear, a jet fly over a couple summers ago. Was star gazing, had my binoculars out, and saw two orange circles zip across the sky. Figured it was the afterburner on an F18. Had to have been HIGH HIGH up to pass over silently like that.

zactly. He was killing the F18s before they even were aware of his presence, visually or otherwise. And then the one time limping home with his seat cushion clamped up his ass hoping he wouldn't have to eject. He had to set up glide slope very quickly to get back to base. Had to add some power to get altitude, thought it was going to shake apart. He went on to fly Stinkbugs, then IP stinkbugs. His a/c was actualy the one shot down over Bosnia, but he had just left the AF and they had not even had time to change the name on the canopy. This is it with his name:

We saw this in the news and freaked the fuck out. We had trouble contacting him for a while to discover his whereabouts. His reply:

I reported that plane stolen two weeks ago.

That looks like a F-117 canopy. Was he flying F-16s at the time?

No, we'll have to do that. :thumbsup:We can use our stargazer phone apps to locate it if we are not sure of orbit, and we had a great viewing a couple years ago on a clear night at Arches NP/ Moab. Weird how it just blinks out when it hits the Earth's umbra.

No, Stinkbug = 117. He was T38 > F16 >117 > 117 IP. Alamadoodoo NM, did several scrambles on military-grade amphetamines to Bosnia area of operations overnight refueling the whole way, but never saw action there.

So it shoudl be over Sac at 8:27 tonight. If Bennett has fallen asleep, we'll run outside to check. But we are in the middle of a lot of light pollution.

It stands out pretty well even with light pollution. Looks like an airplane without strobes.

Is that a term of endearment for the army Shinook?
