Hello, I received my part, and it looks just like the pictures, but it seems like there is not enough space to install it on the lower side.

    Is my truck irregular,
Or more likely I am doing something dumbly???

Anyone, able to tell me why it doesn't fit, or the correct way to insert around the part that lets the tailgate swing down?
It does look like the spacing might be too small though..
Or does the whole tailgate need to be removed to allow installation?

It should just roll right in. However, in a couple of isolated cases, (and as far as I can tell only one other guy and I have had this problem), right in the corner of the tailgate under the hinge where the tailgate skin is crimped together there is some seam sealer applied. In my case there was a big enough blob of it that it interfered with the device. I took a sharp chisel and shaved down that blob a very small amount and then it slid right in. Just something you might check.

This is in no way a criticism of the part or the guy who makes it as it seems to be a very, very rare occurrence. I still highly recommend the part.

You can also heat up a butter knife and flatten the sealer a little to make more room for it.
If you can't get it to fit, I'll give you a full refund if you want to return it.

Yes, this basically worked, i heated a flat screwdriver and smooshed that stuff down, so it fits now.

Just need to figure out how to remove the original t40 bolt next.. i think the tips for that are all buried in this thread. It has not loosened at all even after heating. What is the best technique?

If I just drill the top off, wouldn't I be then left with the rest of the broken off original threaded part of the bolt threadlocked to the part of the tailgate it threads into then, or even cold worked for an extra challenge?!

I searched here, and soldering iron or torch with breaker bar sound promising. Maybe I need to heat longer and higher, and switch to MAP or a soldering iron. I had just tried propane so far.

I took my tailgate off and laid it in the bed on a blanket. Use a scribe or something very sharp to go around the head to get paint out. Use a breaker bar and torx bit. Be sure to put some ass into the bit while trying to break it loose. Mine was tough but broke loose. You could heat it with a blow dryer too. That worked for the fuel door screw. Good luck!

Once the head is off, the remaining piece will unthread very easily.

As I recall reading from others ... the head causes the problem. The head has a reverse ratchet pattern that goes on easy and makes removal (at least by the general public) difficult.

Just for those who wonder why removal is hard.

Can't you guys just stick your key in, turn it and lock the tailgate? Do push button tacos not have that option?

Takes 10 seconds and a screwdriver to bust the tailgate lock.

Rumor says (I have not had one stolen) it can be a $5000 replacement, with electronics, paint, etc. I bought SaBellCo at $100, but even that is still a bargain compared to buying a new tailgate.

But if you think "just locking" is enough ... so be it.
