Please explain. From what I know now: all bolts for assembly will line up, gears are 3.73 in both. I know I wouldn't have the elocker. One thing I am not clear on is the difference with the 8.4 and 8" rings

As I said you can swap the whole assembly. The ring gears are actually both 8” but the elocker specific ones have a different cut and won’t go on the open diff case.

To be honest I don’t know specifics. I just know from what I’ve read on here that it won’t fit. If you want to try, be my guest and post results.

Drum to drum will swap no issue.
Guts for the guts won’t work but it’ll get you riding down the road again.

Thanks for the input guys. I will swap it and post the results. If its a bust then I'll flip the axle and make something off of it. I can't lose either way.

I think I misunderstood your recent post and was quick to jump the gun. When I read:

"So can I still use the 13 axle assembly and just not have the elocker on it for now? At least to get me on the road? I'm getting this 13 axle at a very good price and won't pass it up if I don't have to. That would give me time to get the original back in working order."

For some reason I took that as taking the new axle assembly sans guts, adding e locker diff, but without the actuator. Hence the "not have the e locker". Rereading it I don't know why I thought that. Yes you can swap over the entire new axle assembly with no issues. My apologies for the confusion

if you are getting the entire assembly, yeah you can bolt it right up without the elocker.... it will actually be stronger due to the thicker ring gear and cradle caps.

But like stated you are not swapping guts.

Back in the 1st gen days (3rd gen 4runner) yes you could bolt up an elocker 3rd in a non elocker housing with minimal trimming of the housing, but those days are gone.

That 85 has an 8” diff front and rear, 8” third members can interchange between different 8” housings, including the early trucks, the e-locker low pinion like in the tacoma, and the e-locker high pinion from the front of FZJ80 land cruisers.

The tacoma sport has a 8.4” diff.

The 8” and 8.4” third members and housings are not cross compatible.
