I have a 2014 Prerunner SR5 w/o rear diff. I want to swap my rear axle with a 4wd rear axle with diff. Has anyone done this? The reason I want to go 4wd axle is b/c in the future I'm thinking I'll convert truck into 4wd. I know that sounds like a hassle but its besides the point. Primary concern is the swap.

Can I buy the axle and R/R?
    Any issues with doing this?

All Toyota rear axles have a diff. Are you talking about the elocker? If so, just get an ARB locker.

The rear diff on the prerunner and 4x4s are the same. Some have a E locker if that's what ya mean.

    Yes
No, Not entirely accurate. The non e-lockers are an 8.4 and the lockers are an 8.0.

Want the Axle with E locker because I can do install. Not the case with the ARB air locker.

That's not accurate either. The "8.4" is actually an 8" ring gear, just like in the elocker diff.

Don't be a dick, the guy is obviously new and the search engine on TW is about as useful as a snowmobile in Florida.

The ARB differential is a four-pinion design that is much stronger than the Toyota E-locker.

Mind your own business, adults are talking.[/QUOTE]

Again with the dickish comments, do you think you are somehow special and super Toyota knowledge master man because you know more than someone that is just getting into this ? Does it make you feel special to pick on people on the internet, like all warm and fuzzy inside ? You can answer people's questions like an adult without belittling them.

@Evenflow, you nailed it. I am new to this and just trying get some info. Scrolled through forums for about an hour without a clear answer. Assumed the posting board was available to all users despite current knowledge level.

@gainman, I did ask if I could buy an axle, then followed that with, are there any issues with swapping. Which to me is obviously the important question. Next time I'll PM you a draft of my post to get approval to avoid wasting your time.

These pictures are of a 10.5" Toyota differential, but the design differences are similar for the 8" axle. With the factory e-locker you also have a stupid piece of vulnerable plastic having from your carrier.

Sometimes it gets rough around here. Most of the time you'll get a little bullshit mixed in with good info. Sometimes it's the other way around. There are a couple of different threads where members did the axle swap you're wondering about. There are also threads on doing a 4x4 conversion on your 4x2. with money and patience, anything is possible.

@computeruser6 when you mention the vulnerable plastic, you saying I'd be better off with the ARB air locker?

The elocker is the weak link in that differential. The non elocker differential is better supported, thus stronger, than the elocker diff. This is why Toyota has chosen to inaccurately call it an 8.4.

The ARB is a much stronger setup
