Someone decided to park their Kia minivan on my tow hitch the other day at about 5 mph and push me into a F-250. My GoRhino center guard took the hit up front, no real damage to the truck. On the back side of the truck my hitch receiver got pushed down ever so slightly but shows no damage or signs of bent metal. The frame rails also look undamaged, with no creases, cracks, popped welds or fasteners appearing out of place. The truck rides fine and tracks straight without any noticeable difference...

Other than it seems the axle wrap "Clunk" that our 1st gen rigs are known for has either changed or disappeared. I still notice something similar to it when I'm slowing down to stop, but where it used to be prevalent after stopping and inching forward it hasn't done so recently.

I've taken the truck to two different trusted body shops to have someone see if they find any issues, and they say my truck looks great. One of them even wished his newer Chevy Silverado was as tough as my little '03!

Just wondering if anyone had any input or experience with something like this.

    You found the cure!

They should make this post a sticky. Add instructions and a video if you can.

    Josh,

Sorry about your accident. What is the axle wrap clunk? I can't say I am familiar with that.

    Take it easy,
    Paul

You would be better served by searching the topic here on the forum, man. My explanation wouldn't even come close to what's already been discussed so many times before.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
Next time don't stop so close. 5mph pushed you into another vehicle? I was rear ended well above that and didn't move more than a few inches forward.

Update for anyone interested. The axle wrap is back as before. No issues at all with my truck. I say case closed.

Yeah, the wrap definitely doesn't happen all the time for me, at least to the point i can notice it.

Actually, it usually comes back the minute I consciously start thinking that I haven't gotten the clunk in a while... lol

I know what axle wrap is but never felt it even back when I had the stock, worn out rear leaves with 125,000 miles on them. I put in an OME suspension with 880's up front and J-59 Deavers out back. No clunk when I shift. Never had one. The Deaver's are about a year old now and if I don't shift just right I get a clunk or some other weird anomaly like maybe a broken tranny mount but I just looked at the tranny mount the other day and it looked fine. I will admit the sun was going down and I didn't look at it real close. The U-joints have recently been greased as well. It's as if there is "play" on the drive train somewhere.

Anyone have any idea what it is or is it just axle wrap that I should ignore and just shift better. It doesn't happen if I rev it to 3000rpm in the lower gears but I like to do 2500rpm.

This BudBuilt trac bar will cure your axle wrap issues. I just installed mine and it is something I should have done years ago.

I'll look at those if the problem becomes "really" annoying. I'm trying to leave mine as stock as possiblt because I only need stock but we'll see in the future. Thanks for the tip.
