New member here with a question about axle wrap. I just got my truck a few days ago and I'm noticing what feels like a "wiggling" when coming to a complete stop. It's hard to explain, but almost like the back of the truck and driveline is still moving forward even though I am stopped.

I do know for a fact that my rear axle seal is leaking and with that my rear shoes are bathing in gear oil, but I not sure if this would cause the feeling I am getting. I've greased everything including the slip yoke and it has gotten a little better.

Could it be the hanger bearing causing excessive movement in the driveline??
I've searched the forum trying to find an answer, but it's hard to search wiggling :D my 04 crew cab 4x4 is not lifted, but does have 31.5 tires on it.. thanks!

thanks for doing the leg work for me. I just want to make sure this is the culprit for the feeling I'm getting. I'm not experiencing any audible or physical "clunk" as others have described. It just feels like the rear of the truck is moving around at a complete stop. I also checked for bad shock mounts and leaf spring perches. I will keep digging through the site and see if anything matches my problem. thanks so far guys, great site!

"Axle wrap" at least to my definition isn't that. It's the torque being applied overcoming the springs and twisting the axle during acceleration. It's usually only a problem if you have lift blocks or pushing some decent horsepower. You hit the gas and the entire axle housing twists pointing your pinion up towards the bed.

Usually axle wrap results in a clunking or lurching. During decel the springs can build up some rotational energy and release it when you fully stop, sometimes feeling like you're being rear ended. What you're describing sounds like an unbalanced driveshaft or brake issues (warped rotor perhaps?) Could also be a bad pinion angle from axle wrap but I'd expect it to happen under acceleration too.

    Just some thoughts...

I would fix the gear lube soaked brake drums and axle seal and see if that fixes it first.

These trucks do get nasty axle wrap, but you would really notice it on accel as well.

Doesn't sound like axle wrap, mine is clunky when it happens- mind you I'm on stock springs- had it with both OEM yellow billies, and now with 5125s in the back (seemed to help a little). I have a Bud Built trac bar, but haven't installed it yet lol. Besides the other suggestions maybe you have blown rear shocks allowing a lot of movement, giving you the unsettled and still moving feeling?

Mine didn't clunk. It just loaded up the axle when I came to a stop, then when I let off the brake it would lurch a bit. A clunk would be a u joint in my mind.

Cambridge area, I'm noticing a lot of members from MN here on TW.

I plan on getting the brakes and axle seal replaced soon. I'm sure this could cause strange things to happen, not to mention the crummy brake pedal feel.

I may have to look into the hanger bearing too. Thinking that it could be causing excessive play in my driveline, whatever it is I'm pretty sure it isn't normal. I was able to push up on the driveshaft about 1/2 " and did notice some cracking in the rubber around the bearing. One more observation is, when I'm accelerating fairly hard I can hear and feel just a bit of whirring from the transmission "hump" area. Maybe this is normal for the autos... thanks so far guys.

just wanted to update the thread. I replaced my hanger bearing and the "slack" or movement under acceleration and braking was still there. Followed the link for axle wrap and bought the u bolt clamps from Autozone.

I installed them about 5 inches forward the axle and NO MORE CLUNK!!!! The truck feels much more solid and doesn't have the strange movement after coming to a complete stop. I'm really happy this worked, I do plan on ordering new leaf springs and would like some input on which ones would be the best for a little more lift in the rear. I would like to raise the front also. Thanks for all the help so far.

I just had Wheelers Offroad progressive AALs installed and the OEM overload leafs pulled off- axle wrap is gone for now. I have a Bud Built trac bar to install... but looks like I don't need it now-- though googling around, sounds like as the AALs break in and weaken, the wrap will come back so its good I have the trac bar ready. Didn't install the trac bar because the studs Bud sent out where the wrong size.

I have a 97 that takes the shorter rear leafs, I am in search of a leaf pack that offers 2" of lift in combination with added payload so that I can get rid of those nasty 2" blocks under the sagging factory springs. Talk about axle wrap. any ideas? seems the shorter spring with some added payload capacity is a tough one to find!!
