I've never actually dealt with raid. My understanding was that if a raid controller dies, you need to rebuild with the same controller.

I was thinking of building my own NAS, but with so many HDDs for a few TB, not sure if the heat and power consumption would be worth it.

 

We have a NAS setup at the house.

 

I have a spare tower I could cram 9 HDDs into. If I bought new ones today, and stuffed the old ones in a tower, I would be using 9 HDDs to make about 12 TB. Doesn't really seem worth it.

I hear ya. With portable HDD nowadays it's more convenient to me. Unless you have a shit ton of stuff to back up.

I've got a 2tb wd hard drive and two 1tb Hitachi hard drives in a 4 bay external drive. I forget who the maker is though.

 

Depends on the controller. Since Buffalo uses the same controllers you can get away with it at times. Depends on the RAID as well. I love RAID setups, but with cloud storage costs my Amazon S3 server is cheaper then buying a new NAS.
