Let me make sure I fully understand this correctly. Cuz this is what I understand to be how it works.

You said the same thing after the initial posts.

But here is where you got me a tad confused. I think I misunderstood preload with travel numbers at the end but I'll ask again.

If I have 2 inches of preload which, from the example above, gives me 3 droop and 7 stuff. Now if I get 1 inch longer spring the preload is now only 1 inch for the same ride height, and same travel numbers. The difference being the spring and how harsh it feels. If I were to go with 2 inch longer spring, I wouldn't need any preload but the travel numbers would stay the same. The big difference is the ride again because the coil isn't compressed. Correct?

Correct, that is just an easy explanation but correct theory. When you mash the spring down more it takes more effort to start motion. Take a 100# spring just for easy numbers. It means it takes 100 lbs to compress 1 inch. If you preload the spring 2 inches then it will take 300 lbs to get the shock to compress one inch (3 inches total for the spring). Once the movement starts it still 100 lbs to move each additional inch so overall spring rate does not get "stiffer" so to speak, but initial feel is more harsh

Ok ok... So it takes 300 lbs because it's already compressed 200 lbs for the 2 inches of preload so it takes the extra 100 to compress it one more inch. Got it. And that's why you say it's harsh at first, because at first it's 300 lbs then it goes linear up 100lb/in. Got it finally. Thanks!!

So next question... If I preload the coil 1 inch(there is 1 inch of thread showing) does that mean the coil is compressed 1 inch? I was thinking the coil was strong enough that it just moved the shock shaft down an inch and the spring wasn't compressed.

If the shock isnt on the vehicle it will be fully extended even without a spring, so any preload should compress the spring. And the threads showing depends on the length of spring, like the ones he posted, the icon spring is shorter so you cant tell how much preload is on the actual spring just by looking at threads. Most people here compare threads because they all have the same spring
