Race Radios are VHF "FM" radios at typically 50 watts and easily integrated into Intercoms versus the 4W HF "AM" CB Radio

Matching type comms with other offroaders are nearly a requirement. Easy to communicate changes, routes, turns, issues, jokes, etc. VHF can't talk with CB, so you have to run the same type. CBs are cheap and easy, therefore most common. The sound quality and range of VHF is causing an increase in use, especially with racers, wannabe racers, desert, and expo.

Is there a big price gab between the two? I'm just curious now

Ham radios are becoming ever more popular with 4x4 clubs in AZ. There are a few people out there really pushing them. Especially with some of the cheap radios from China. Greater range, more channels too.

A license is cheap and easy. A couple of hours of studying and $15 and 99% pass.

The Ham License is easier than it used to be and covers useful info.

Morse Code is no longer required. Technician, General and Extra. Each level gets more challenging and opens up access to more frequency ranges. The test covers rules and regulations, radio and antenna theory, communication types, etc.

I took and passed the Tech and General in one sitting after a local club meeting in TX. A single test fee covers all the tests you can/want to try. I knew the Extra was way out of my ability at that point.

Tech covers the most common 2M and 70cm ranges.
Race Radios are actually in the commercial band next to the Ham 2M freq. range.

Not gonna leave it on my curb..

Took it all to work. Done and done.

Letting the trunk/roots soak over the next few days and digging it out slowly. We have begun remodeling the yards
