Somewhat true, race 4 strokes are the most expensive for sure, 2 strokes are much cheaper, but trail/dual sport 4 strokes are even less. If you are looking for a trail/dual sport bike then the 4 strokes are the only way to go. With either 2 or 4 stroke race bikes you have to maintain stuff ALL the time, but the trail bikes (you mentioned a 230) are made for durability more than speed

Edit: I swear I saw you say 230, maybe I am crazy. Either way if you are looking for a dual sport bike you dont want a race bike, how much do you want to spend?

Yeah I will not be racing this is purely for dicking around out at Greens Peak, Simpson Lake, Bear Canyon just want a cheap easy way to go exploring. So high durability factor is what I am looking for and reliable.

Then you definitely want a dual sport 4 stroke, some are electric start, has a head light, can put turn signals etc

I did say 230 or 250 cc I don't need a 350 or 400 at all. Looking to spend less than 2500 for a used bike between 06-2012 read lots of good things about the CRF250L and KLX250

So far this is about what I am looking

Those are both good, the KLX's are pretty close to race bikes with most of the stuff

Another one I was thinking is the crf230, they are a step down from the 250's but they are air cooled and tanks when it comes to maintenance

    http://tucson.craigslist.org/mcy/5084306743.html

Edit: That cost is high for the year but just to see what they look like

If I could get him to come down to 1800 or so that seems kinda steep for a 12 year old bike am I wrong in thinking that?

Yeah thats what I think too, that is literally the only 230 on craislist in Phoenix, I just linked to show a picture but I am sure you can find one cheaper

like you said different strokes for differnt folks.
in my opinion, the only good thing about a 2 stroke is you can rebuild the entire engine with a couple hundred bucks and a hour of time. shit my dad has rebuilt several several 2 smokers in the dunes in under 45 minutes. (piston, rings, ect) but with any 4 stroke.... motor work is going to cost you some major major $$$$$$

but the thing about a 2 stroke, is you will need to rebuild that bike at least every season. a 4 stroke can go many many seasons without needing a rebuild. but then you need to deal with the valves. but 4 strokes are WAY WAY less maintance than a 2 stroke....

also, please dont get a 230. you will love it for the first few months, but they are pretty slow. you will out grow it very quickly.

dude you can get an awesome bike for under $2500!!
i am stoked for you :)
keep $500 set aside for proper gear ;)

    2 grand, 2006,

Edit: regarding head lights and tail lights, you can buy some badass aftermarket helmet lights for riding at night that is a million times better than having a light on your bike. they are expensive but they are amazing.
the electric start would be nice on the other hand, but that adds like 10lbs to the bike.... id rather have a way light bike.

Seriously wtf I must be retarded. I've been searching "250cc dirt bike" in CL for 2 weeks now and haven't seen that bike. Yeah I would love just a kick start bike i don't need a battery and electronic start. Is there a mod you can do to newer bikes? I thought pretty much all new bikes are electric?

well thats your problem. no one lists bikes as 250cc

search all these types of things:
    crf250
    crf 250
    yzf250
    yzf 250

the more simple your search, the more bikes that will show up.

when you come over next ill have to show you some craiglist FU skills

    heres a link for you
    http://phoenix.craigslist.org/searc...min_auto_miles=&max_auto_miles=&query=crf+250

and here is another one that is basically the same search, the only difference is a space inbetween crf and 250, and it shows completely different bikes.

    http://phoenix.craigslist.org/searc...&min_auto_miles=&max_auto_miles=&query=crf250

I want a banshee.. I rode a friends 200cc honda dirtbike around butcher jones and up into four peaks last summer. That was a blast. I suck at hill climbs though.. I crashed a couple times too but nothing bad and I had some armor and a helmet.

I want to get something at some point same reason as prise, to explore!

CL takes some ninja skills for sure.

Speaking of CL there is a 97 supercharged, SAS 4 runner on 40s for 10k on it now.
