I have a mindset when it comes to selling a modified vehicle that you usually won't get back anywhere near what you put in it. Many people will like the look and functionality of everything, but not understand it all and the costs and won't be willing to pay extra for it all. That said, you could still probably get around $26k outright for it.

Dealers won't give you shit for all those goodies. Your BEST option is to offer up trades + cash for your mods and go back to stock. At that point you should still be able to get 21k+ for your trade if you know how to work the system.

Thanks. That was another question I had. If I should pull the mods and sell them here on TW. If I do go this route I will most likely try to sell to and buy from private party to avoid taxes unless I can find a sweetheart of a deal.

The lease on the wife's Camry is up in Feb so she will be getting a SUV. We had an Acadia which she loved until she totaled it so we are looking at something like that. We had talked about her new car becoming the tow vehicle, but I figured the difference between an Acadia and a Sequoia/Tahoe would get me a diesel and she wouldn't be driving such a big SUV...

You need some towing power? Super cheap.

How much and what type of regular driving do you do? How big/heavy is the trailer? How often are you hoping to tow the trailer? Actually? How many seats are needed?

The diesel market is pretty stupid lately. Diesel prices are at/or higher than Regular Unleaded. Realistic fuel economy isn't really as advertised. Auto trans aren't the most durable behind the diesels. Filters/Fluids are more/higher capacity.

I recently traded into a 95 Ford F250, extended cab, long bed, 4x4, 173k for 10.5k. It's in good cosmetic shape, great interior shape, decent mechanical shape. But I've got the 4runner for daily/unloaded duties.

The Ford 7.3s are good, but on the slow side (03 and older). 6.0s are very hit or miss on reliability, but stronger.
Dodge Cummins are great motors, but everybody wants them. The A/Ts are very picky about any extra power or high temps. 02 and older are horrible interior quality. 03-07 would be my sweet spot, but listed prices are way over 20k for 200k+ miles.

Anything 07 or newer is under the more recent emissions standards. Which hurt economy and reliability overall. Regular MPGs are easily in the low teens, with higher maintenance and repair costs.

If creature comforts are desirable, newer is wanted, short commutes, limited towing (not almost daily); I'd really consider the newer half-tons. The Fords with the 5.0 and 6 speed (11? and newer I think) and Dodges with the 8 speed A/Ts (very recent) give decent mileage empty (mid-high teens on gas), great comfort and interior; and wouldn't be bothered by towing 7-9k 6-12 times a year.

Unless your heavy and towing all the time, diesel is actually very hard to justify. We've got several thousand Chevy's across the company. Lot's of 3/4 ton 4x4s, 99+% are gas engines that get handed down to job trucks until over 250k miles.

I've had my fair share and been around a bunch of various options in different capacities. Ask away!

Wow, thanks for the info. Our travel trailer is pretty light at 3800 dry, 4700 GVWR. Its 24' long and has a pretty big frontal area (8'x10'). We just got it but will being doing 1-2 trips per month to the Rim or mountains. We got the trailer because the wife isn't a backcountry camper and we have a 1 year old (= a lot of shit).

My daily commute is 15 mi round trip :)

I have not run everything over scales but I know we have to be pushing it on our rear axle weight and combined vehicle weight. I have an Equalizer weight-distribution hitch and Prodigy brake controller on the Taco now. On the flats and even downhill, everything is fine. No bob or sway and the trailer brakes work great. When we get to a hill is when things aren't so great. I think the Taco will probably be ok as long as I keep an eye on the trans temp and change the fluid more regularly, but its the whole riding vs. driving thing. With a full-size I could enjoy the scenery without stressing out looking at Torque every few seconds to see if we need to pull over. We have another trip Aug 1, so if I haven't done anything by then I'm sure that trip will be the decision maker as to what I want to do.

Another option will be that with a full-size I can get a trailer to tow my CJ5. Figure what 2500 lbs for a double axle trailer and 3000 lbs for the Jeep?

Gas vs. Diesel. - I had seen a 2012 F250 gasser at a dealer for $31k (58k miles) that seemed like a decent truck. I know any full-size (1/2 or 3/4) will suit our needs given how light the trailer is. Another truck I saw on CL was a lifted 03 F350 6.0L bulletproofed for $16k. My brother-in-law is a die hard diesel guy who tows bigger stuff than I will probably ever so I am going off some of his advice. He just sold a 5.7 Hemi Ram 2500 Power Wagon to get an 03 F350 7.3 diesel. A newer gasser or older diesel 4 door is what I am thinking.

    Thanks!

I don't see diesel being realistic for you. If an awesome deal dropped in your lap, ok.

I was more interested in a manual trans and unmolested suspension when I got rid of the Dodge 2500 V10 (4" wagon-riding lift, tired A/T that wouldn't hold OD) for the Ford F250. M/T is just more prevalent with diesel versus V10/big blocks. The V10 would get 10mpg no matter what, which is just fine when it's parked for 2 weeks at a time.

I'm hoping to end up with a pop-up truck camper or decent sized enclosed trailer for the buggy (~3000 lbs). Lots of edge of valley trips when the buggy is together and a trip to Moab and KOH each year very likely.

I actually towed the buggy a couple times with my lifted 1st gen taco  Not recommended. Figure 2-2.5 for standard car trailers and actually closer to 4 for any regular Jeep. That is well within recent 1/2 ton capacity.

Based on prior experience, run from any lifted truck with unknown history.
