    Payson is a great town and very quick to get into Phoenix. It will only take you about 30- 45min north or east to get up on the Mogillion Rim.

    Im not a huge fan of Heber/Overguard personally. Pine/Strawberry is a great area north of Payson that I spent a lot of time at when I was growing up.
    Show Low, thats Andrews hood. Ive only been there once.

    Have you considered Prescott?

    Its definitely a town worth visiting for sure. Sounds like you've got a good idea. Im a big fan of Christopher Creek as well. Thats the last very small town you will pass as you get up to the top of the Rim when you head East from Payson
