Ah, looks just like my AFE except mine isnt sealed.

 

Is yours the afe stage 2? That's what I has before the TRD. I love the TRD SO much more than that afe.

 

Yes sir it is. I didnt know there was a sealed version. This AFE came on my truck from the dealer. Whats the diff with the TRD

 

The 1st gen TRD is the same thing as the afe stage 2 si that Pat has. Uses a cone filter. The 2nd gen TRD uses a flat filter. Also.. I can't remember exactly, but between the 1st gen and 2nd .. one runs richer than the other I think. Its either that or different tubing. Colby has the 1st gen. pretty sure he knows.

 

Why do you like yours more? I like the way the AFE sounds when I take off and what not but I havent had another set up so I wouldnt know the difference.

 

The afe was TOO loud/ raspy imo. At first I loved it. But soon became annoying. Plus.. its sucking in warm air.. making it a hot air intake as opposed to mine or pats where its sealed and drawing from the stock fender location.

I noticed the truck pulled and ran better along with slightly better mpg's after switching

 

hmm i havent actually looked at many other side walls besides the general grabbers (which are thick as fuck) my km2s sidewalls are probably half the thickness of a general, if that.

 

Well i love my KM2's. There'er is a reason they are one of the best choices for serious wheelers. I know a lot of people who have general tires and normally always switch after the first set but I have never had them so I don't know. My tires are heavy as guvnors so I definitely wouldn't want a heavier tire. Thicker side wall equals heavier I would think bit I dunno. I did a lot of research and nothing seemed to compare to the KM2s.

As far as the intake goes, my AFE is super throaty and low sounding, like a racecar. Its not raspy at all. Does the TRD intake come on all TRD models stock? I am sure thats a dumb question but TRD tacos i drive by dont have that same deep rumble i get when i accelerate.

 

No. Its an option. And mine was 'rumbly' too at low rpm's.. the TRD is the same. But its a different rumble. If we are ever at a meet.. You can hear mine. I really do think the TRD is better than the afe. Its made improvements too.

 

I am not arguing against it,I just never hear it but I also drive like I am being chased by the cops all the tome so Maybe That's why I hear mine haha! I would definitely switch to TRD if I could get some gains from it. Once I get a new exhaust I don't think I'll really hear the intake as much anyway.

 

1st Gen: Is exactly like the AFE stage2.. Louder than the 2nd Gen. It was made by AFE I believe.

2nd Gen: Flat filter, runs a bit leaner than then 1st Gen intake does. This intake was made by AEM. Some people get lean codes but this tends to be with supercharges mainly. They can be cut to fix that lean code with a SC. 2nd Gen is very quiet vs 1st Gen. It's a big difference. I had issues with 2nd Gen because Toyota forgot to put the MAF gasket back on. Ended up getting a 1st gen and didn't really need too.

I prefer the 2nd Gen vs. the 1st. Looks better, sounds better, quieter(if that matters).

on my 06 I had an intake like the afe, it was the airaid open shield design and I had exhaust too. It was cool. Sounded good. But like the afe intake I got rid of.. it became annoying as well. Lots of drone from inside the cab. Not trying to sway you one direction or another.. your truck. just giving examples and personal experience that might help. I wish I had more info and examples when I did that to mine and even got the afe intake on my current truck. Lol would have saved me alot of time and frustration. Currently... I have the TRD intake and that's it. And I love it. Quiet on long droves. But has the rumble at low rpm and when you mash the skinny pedal.

 

Thanks Colby. I was sort of right. Lol. Colby can give a good comparison too. He's heard his (1st gen TRD) my old one (afe stage 2) and the 2nd gen TRD ( what I have now)
