In all honesty, if I did it again I'd probably buy an old yota pickup or an old 4 runner, beef that out, and get a wrx or something as a daily...

Just got some work done on our 71 Firebird today.

    New rear breaks/drums
    New Front Breaks
Oil Change (thanks Spencer for helping the other week)
    New Plugs

We are running into a problem where it will diesel out after we shut it off the key and the motor will refuse to shut off. Pretty sure that would be due to timing but wanted opinions. The only way to shut the car off now is pull the key, let it start to diesel and then step on the gas and flood it out. Not cool :(

you need to look at a few things then.
running too low an octain fuel can cause this
lots of carbon in the cumbustion chaimbers can glow from the heat and ignight the last but of incoming fuel/air, and ignight it
    timing being advanced too far
    high idle speed

    Didn't see this.

Only gets 91 gas, 400big block with a racing cam and carb..
The carbon may be a problem too. What would be the best way to clean this?
Timing def seems to be the issue after reading up more on it. Not sure about idol speed but I'll look into it.

False statement. Pontiac didn't have big or small blocks. It's a popular misconception. But 1955 - 1978ish Pontiac blocks all used the same external dimensions, other than the 301, which was a short deck. The 421, 428, and 455 cranks did use a larger main journal though. They had the internal casting to allow for larger cylinders, small journal and large journal would be the only real way of differentiating them. So technically you have a small block if you go by crank journal size.
