Have been reading a little about it and many claim the 8watt handhelds are a bit overkill and all you really need is 4/5watts?

Claiming with a good antenna that's all you need :notsure:

I'm borrowing a 5w ht with a good external antenna and I can reach out with that. I was at Luke awhile back and could hit Shaw Butte repeater in north Phx

Ham feasts always have a testing session going on. Superstition club, thunderbird club, devry are a couple of big clubs. Also check out www.4x4ham.com for ham runs and other info.

Testing is usually $35 and a cool trick is for that one fee you can take all three tests. If you pass tech, ask for a general test. If you pass general, ask for extra. General is just a more indepth tech stuff, extra is really technical on electronics. You don't need anything more than tech for 90% of ham radio stuff, but it doesn't hurt to try the others for free.

Standard handhelds are 5W and work fine. The 8w is a nice thought but not really necessary. Most in car race radios are 50w or 110w. I have a 65w modded Yaesu 2800 that I will be hard mounting in the truck which was by far the best hard mounted unit I have used. Frequently out performed the 110w Race radios we had in the chase trucks. I am also not licensed but I only operate in the commercial bands on frequencies that I know you could find on a pre-programed PCI radio the Boafengs I got as loaners.

I will never understand why people have such a hard fucking time getting into meetings. Phone, Google Hangouts, Webex, people are so fucking stupid.

Yup. It's amazing when tech people can't figure out how to join a meeting. 28 min call, we've moved to 3 hosting providers for meetings, she STILL can't get it right. Finally we just call her on a cell phone and she's using her desktop instead of her laptop.

Her desktop doesn't have a microphone installed...
